I am getting my first digital camera right after Christmas, after years with a 35mm. I have checked that the lens I already have, will work with the new camera, and I was just wondering if I should get the body alone, or get it with the lens that comes with it? Right now I have Canon 28mm, 50mm, and a Prospec 70-210mm. The new camera would come with a 18-55mm. Is it worth having that lens as well?
The 18-55 is probably as good or better then the 28mm you have but won't touch the 50 from an IQ standpoint. Going from 35mm film body to a 1.6X sensor will take some getting used to, your 28mm isn't going to be wide at all and with a 10mp sensor you're going to see lens irregularities you probably never saw on film. But unless you're prepared to buy some additional lenses I'd say the 18-55 isn't a bad idea until you decide on what you want.
Thank you all for your help. I have enjoyed looking through the pictures that have been posted here on this site, and look forward to getting into this hobby.
I did find the camera with the lens at Walmart for $616. I have not seen it cheaper anywhere yet. Not sure what will happen after Christmas.
I'd get the lens. this way you can have a real wide angle. Stopped down it's not that bad of a lens. Primes are great but having a zoom in this focal length is great on a digital camera. Don't get me started on walmart
