try lead, sand takes up to much room. You can put 300 pounds of lead where you put 100 pounds of sand.

I put my lead (wheel weights) into sand bags. We have 700 lbs of it on our boat.

If you can melt down your wheel weights. A 4" tube 16" long = 75lb. I mad 4 of them from my work.

They're kind've an awkward shape, especially in the bow. If you want to use sand, try the bags of sandbox sand (50 lbs each) from the home center. I use four of 'em in the bow of my boat. I wrapped 'em in plastic and duck-taped the hell out of 'em. They look ghetto, but I usually have the bow cover on.

i use the sand bags....they have there place. Lead is very expensive.....sand is about 2 bucks for a 70 pound bag. I reccomend coating them with duck tape to prevent spills....sand in your boat motor is not a good thing. Like i said they have there place....mine are stuck under every seat cushion so its evenly placed and they stay there permanantly

Don't forget about the trailering problem with sand/lead. Fat-Sacs can be drained so you are not dragging around 500# of extra weight on your trailer.

I had 1000 lbs in mine. tandem axle. It wasnt bad because my boat was less than a mile from the ramp. it gets wet, it practically turns into concrete. so be careful putting into tight places.

Oh yea, I used the orange construction bags and a friends sand pile. no duct tape needed if you get the 2-ply woven industrial bags.}

As far as price ges...lead is actually the cheapest. Go to the local indoor gun range and if you bring a 5gallon bucket with you, you get a 5 gallon bucket of lead in exchange! And some of the places I went would even give it away bucket and all. Then on top of that..any of the construction places will give you the tool bags with their name on free of charge! 700lbs of lead in mine...free of charge! Allthough it is added weight all the time...but one down side isn't bad!
