I am installing a couple of ballast puppies.

Do people install their pumps in a box to protect the pump from water?

I added a ballast puppy last year and made a housing out of fiberglass. I heard that they are pretty tough pumps but I wanted to keep the electrical connections dry. So far so good and no problems.

Dane,

In that X-Star I had for a while, one pump was mounted on the floor, underseat, without a housing. I think the others were in the engine compartment elevated a bit off the bilge.

I have three on my boat with no housing. The one in the ski locker actually was about half way under water the other weekend when we got swamped with a few rollers from behind. I bilged out the water and the pump ran just fine after being partially submerged.

I didn't put mine in a housing either. But you could make something really nice out of plexiglass or billet aluminum if that's your game.

Mine are in the rear of one of the V-drive side bins. They can get damp from wet stuff being thrown in there and dripping, but can't get waterlogged. I haven't had a problem in 5 years.
