Over the weekend I went out looking to replace my F350 Diesel. Having had so many problems with my 6.0 I was curious how the 6.4 was holding up. After talking with a few of the Tech guys and The fleet salesman I think I will wait for the new Ford designed Diesel motor in 2011. Anybody else heard anything about this new truck?

Yeah the new engine is going to be a 6.7 made by ford and another engineer. It will not be made by international. The article I read said it is likely 400hp and around 750lbs torque. It can also run biodiesel.

Been waiting on it to come out. I have a 6.0 now but heard the rumors about 2 years ago that this new motor was coming. It should be a beast!

Benefits of the new 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel engine:

· First use of a compacted graphite iron (CGI) engine block in a Super Duty-class vehicle in North America; CGI is stronger than cast iron, and Ford successfully has used the material in engine blocks in products around the world. The block structure was optimized for reduced weight and maximum strength to meet the demands of higher torque, more horsepower and better fuel economy.
· Unique inboard exhaust and outboard intake architecture, an automotive-industry first for a modern production diesel, reduces overall exhaust system volume, which leads to better throttle response; a reduced exhaust system surface area minimizes heat transfer to the engine compartment and improves NVH (noise, vibration and harshness).
· The single-sequential turbocharger features an industry-first double-sided compressor wheel mounted on a single shaft. The unit is uniquely center-mounted on a pedestal low in the back of the valley for improved NVH. The design allows the single unit to deliver the advantages of a twin-turbocharger system in a smaller, more efficient package, combining the benefits of a small turbocharger (faster response) and a large turbocharger (ability to compress and force more air into the engine for more power) in one unit.
· The high-pressure fuel system injects fuel at more than 29,000 psi. The system delivers up to five injection events per cylinder per cycle using eight-hole piezo injectors to spray fuel into the piston bowl. The direct-injection system is calibrated and phased for optimum power, fuel efficiency and NVH.
· Aluminum cylinder heads for reduced weight; the mid-deck construction with dual water jackets provides increased strength and optimal cooling; six-head bolts, instead of four as found on other engines, help improve sealing and maintain cylinder integrity even with the higher firing pressures.
· Compatible up to B20 fuel, allowing greener fueling options of up to 20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent petroleum diesel.

"Developing the new 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 turbocharged diesel engine was an awesome endeavor," said Adam Gryglak, lead 6.7-liter diesel engineering manager. "After all the engineering and testing, we're confident this engine will ensure the new Super Duty continues its leadership in capability, reliability and productivity."

The engine and aftertreatment system for the 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 turbocharged diesel powertrain ably meets the new, more stringent 2010 federal emissions requirements for nitrogen oxides (NOx), which have to be lowered by approximately 80 percent.

I am super satisfied with my 08 F250 6.4 PSD, the only complaint I have is it gets pretty crappy mileage. Tows very well, pulled 12.5K last week and it performed as well as my last truck, a 2006 Dodge 5.9 Cummins.

The ride/interior/fit and finish/etc are all top notch, IMHO.Upload

Sounds like you didnt learn your lesson. I'd give it a year or two before I'd pick up a Ford with a new engine.

I have a 2008 F450 with the 6.4 and i love the truck. It has 30k on it and i havent had any problems out of it. And it tows like a beast. I cant wait to see the new truck and new motor.

Richard, Exactly. Not sure I would want a first year production with new engine and maybe even a new transmission?

I wouldn't either.. then again.. I'm 100% for the Cummins... *drool* so my opinion doesnt matter. Also, if thats gonna be the new ford.. GROSSSSS.. I like meatheads f250 =)

It will have a 6-speed tranny. Suppose to be a beefier version of the 6-speed that is in the F150.

Also will get 3-4 MPG better than the 6.4.

buying a first year first run of a ford built diesel, sounds like what not to do. remember when chevy tried it? how many 6.5's are still running? not many. wasnt the 6.9 a ford built? disasterous. thats why everyone out sourced them in the first place.

Just got rid of my 08 6.4l last week. Loved the truck itself, but with all of the new restrictions put on them, I don't have a lot of faith in whats to come.

I think I had a nightmare about "cleaning exhaust filter" last night in fact lol.

stay away from new trucks cost a fortune and you sing up to be a guinea pig for ford. im a ford guy to and if our going to stick with ford find a 06 or 07 and warranty the crap out of it and drive it hard the worst thing people do with those trucks is try to baby them. that also goes for the 6.4 the harder you work them the less they go into regen meaning less fuel burnt working in a ford store sure noticed the difference. every year they go a little more reliable. i would also consider the v 10 gas lots of power and good on gas make sure its the 3 valve tho.

Twin turbo in a single case?Aluminum heads?I think I will pass like I did the last two engines and stick with my 7.3.Seems to have worked out for me this decade.

The turbo is "uniquely center-mounted on a pedestal low in the back of the valley"?!?!?! What??? If there is any problem you are gonna either have to remove the engine or pull the cab in order to get to it! And the way it sounds to me they are gonna pushing that little turbo HARD!!! Bad idea in my opinon. Atleast right now if there is a problem with the turbo it is right up on top of the engine and easy to work on.

That's why I'm still driving a 7.3. The old saying "there's no replacement for displacement" may or may not be true, but they haven't made a better engine (in a Ford) since.

Do you even know where the engine valley is? This setup prevents the cab from having to be pulled to access the turbo. They are able to put it in the valley because of the inboard exhaust, Which puts it top center of the engine right in front of your face. See picture above. Most turbos are behind the engine where they route the outboard exhaust.

Just glad you didn't mention spark plug location.

Ok Twitch, I was gonna stay out of here but...Well we are all very excited about the new engine but a little nervous as well. We can't afford another 6.0 and I know Ford isn't willing to risk that again. The technology thats going into our new motors (not just this one) is pretty amazing as well as very forward thinking. I honestly haven't seen a ton more than is available to you guys at this point but I'll be getting some extensive training on it soon I'm sure. It's pretty awesome that they made a more efficient, more powerful, cleaner and quieter motor than ever before. It has endured some pretty extensive testing so you 7.3 guys cross your fingers that its just as reliable because some day you're gonna have to replace those bad boys.

I think that 2011 looks great. Timing should be just right for me. I'll give them 2 years to get the bugs worked out, then trade my '06 on one.

I guess I'm one of the few, but I love my 6.0. Great power. Great fuel economy and no problems in 50k of abuse. I might be jinxing myself, but the later motors seemed to have a lot of the problems worked out.

Yeah the 05 is pretty good...The 06 and 07's are pretty rock solid.

140,000 miles on an 05'. Most of the work done on it was done under warranty. Got stranded in Bend, OR. headed back home to AL. Luckily I have friends in Bend to stay with. The injector computer went out and cost a nice 1,200.00

I have 163,000 + miles on my '06 6.0. Only a couple minor issues with a computer thingy, and one injector. Other than that, one set of brakes, and three sets of tires later, I'm still happy.

I had a 05 and 06. Ford bought them both back with just under 20,000 miles. both had head gasket problems. no have a 7.3 and had no problems. I would not buy a new one for a year or 2 after coming out with the new motor.
Old     (h2oproaccessories)      Join Date: Sep 2007       10-08-2009, 9:22 AM Reply
do you pull heavy loads with yours Greg? Normally when we go out of town were pulling a 26' goose neck trailer loaded with machinery. I think we had 1 or 2 injectors, the injector computer, and Some kinda engine gasket blowout.. or something.. I can't remember. Whatever it was, it was an issue with the 6.0's they say once that's fixed they are bulletproof.... guess we shall see.

I also have a 01' 7.3 never had a problem out of the engine... only replaced the starter 2 times due to a fuel leak that leaked right onto the starter, shorting it out. It is sitting right now due to trany problems though...then again.... many miles pulling heavy loads.

Hey Hate.... What's the story on exhaust? I've been weighing it for a while. If I change mine it'd be to help with turbo life. If that logical, or are they fine stock. Power and exhaust noise are fine for me with the stock system. From previous threads I've been told not to bother with cat back and that I have to eliminate the cat if I want any gains in turbo life (lower egt's). Here in Cali that may be a problem down the road.

I have an 07 350 SRW with 38,000 miles.
Took it to the dealer for the 30,000 and they replaced the bed pan gasket which was leaking and one of the problems that plagued the 6.0. The fix took 24 hours and would have cost me around $2400 if it wasn't covered by warranty. I love my 6.0 but the fact they have to remove the cab to work on the motor really sucks. I hope the Scorpion isn't the same.
I haul my 4000 lb. camper with my Avalanche and the motor just purrs right along. With this setup I get around 10 MPG.
You can't beat Ford's pay load rating.

Evan, yeah you wanna take off from the cat back but be sure and keep it, we hit trade ins for $1200 deduct when they're without them. If you're not wanting more power and noise then don't bother if you're gonna trade up in a couple years.
