Photoshop CS2, if you don't have access to that then always try to get the "latest" version of the program you are interested in. In your case Photoshop Elements 4.0

To jump on this question. What is someone with NO photoshop experience going to see from CS2 & the extra $500, than I would from Elements 4.0?

If it is going to be a huge difference and THAT much better, great.... But if I am not going to use 95% of CS2....I would rather put the $500 towards a 70-200 2.8........

The first thing that comes to mind is You can work with RAW on CS2 and You can't on Elements.

you must know the full capabilities of what the latest versions of Photoshop can do. The techonology is constantly changing for the better.

Photoshop is a key component of any photographers gear.

95% of CS2 ???????

Maybe if you're Thomas Knoll or Russell Brown. Personally I would say I use about 10% of it's features, but there are some things that are pretty tough or impossible to do without it. As always I guess if you have to ask you probably don't need it. PS elements is a good place to start.
