I should be receiving my boat soon... equipped with a Mercruiser 6.2L MX Black Scorpion.

What is the recommended way to break the motor in?

Hi Kyle.
This is straight from the Merc. manual.

Do not operate below 1500 rpm for extended periods of time for the first 10 hours. Shift into gear as soon as possible after starting and advance the throttle above 1500 rpm if conditions permit safe operation.

Do not operate at one speed consistantly for extended periods.

Do not exceed 3/4 throttle during the first 10 hours. During the next 10 hours, occasional operation at full throttle is permissible (5 minutes at a time maximum).

Avoid full acceleration from IDLE speed.

Do not operate at full throttle until the engine reaches normal operating temperature.

Frequently check engine oil level. Add oil as needed. It is normal for oil consumption to be high during the break-in period.

Kyle - None of the engines that I've had have ever used enough oil during break-in that you need to add some but I have heard stories of very high consumption.

After 20 hours, you're good to go hard.

Keep in mind that all the magazine boat testing gets done with a brand new motor and they run the snot out of them. It doesn't seem to hurt anything but it's not recommended by Merc.

It's tuff not to load it up right away and see what the wake will be like.

Are you starting to lose sleep, waiting for your boat to show up. There's nothing like the feeling of getting a new toy that you call your own.
