I am toying the the thought about making my own Fiberglass Platform. I have teak now. If anyone has knowledge or input, it would be greatly appretiated. I am planning on makeing a styrafoam model, then placing braces into it, and then covering it with fiberglass. Sand it down smooth, and then spray with Gel coat. Or would body filler be better. I figure with the gel coat, It can have the color in it.
Would this idea work?? would it be worth the time and effort???

Mike,
Are you planning on making a mold out of your fiberglass piece, or building the actual deck off of your foam. If the latter is the case, I don't think you will be able to use gel coat, or at least it won't look as good. If your making a mold then doing your deck, gel coat will work perfectly. I toyed with the idea for a while, but then I sold my boat with a teak deck, so no use anymore.

Your plan sounds fine. If you have the ability to spray gel coat then great of for it. If not apply some bondo, sand smooth and shoot some 2k paint over it.

The gel will be much harder wearing though.

I tossed around the idea of making one but ultimately bought one from swimplatforms.com for about $1,200 custom to my boat. I was surprised at how heavy it was when it arrived and also at how simple/unsophisticated the mounting hardware was. Needed to add grip tape to the top as it was very slippery. Good luck.
