Use gel coat repair kit. Not glass

why the gel coat??

Because that's the 'white' on the outside of the boat. ( boat colors )

I've patched many scratches. If it's more than 1/4" into the glass, after the gell coat, I'll put some resin and epoxy there, then recover with the gel coat repair.

It's always a good idea to keep the glass covered.

Most repair kits also come with a plastic sheet so the gel repair comes aout as shiny as the original gel coat.

back to sid7 original question how do you know if it is the same shade of white? White has to have more different (grammar?) shades than any other color.

That's true. When I needed to repair a nick in black gelcoat I called the manufacturer and they sent me a tiny can that was color matched to my year boat....for free!!
