There has been some discussion at the shop as to the longevitiy of engines between the older (now) Ford 351 and Chevy's 350. I've heard more than 2000 hours on Fords but, never heard anything on the longevity of Chevy's. What are some of the hours people have seen? A friend of mine just sold his 1968-72 Invader with a 6 cyl mercruiser that had 10,000 hours on it. They had rebuilt it once. The transom rotted out or he'd still have it.

Almost 16000 on a 97 centurion, corroborated. Always loaded. Only thing we had to replace was the impeller.

16,000...you mean 1,600? 16,000 is like 8 hours a day (Message edited by jrudd on March 17, 2003)

1,600 sounds more like it. That's still like 265 hrs. a yr. Pretty good for a guy who works for a living.

Across the lake from us is a '76 MC Stars and Stripes with over 4000 hrs on it. They were the first ones on the lake to have a V8 boat (in '76) and I grew up watching them and loving the look and sound of it. I just met them last summer and they gave me a pull behind it. Super cool guys. It's no show boat any more, but runs and rides super. Handles better than mine, actually...

not the most by far but, i've got 850 hrs on my chevy 454 (1987). knock on wood, it's not showing any signs of slowing down. compression tests are fine, the only major work was changing out the timing chain when i was fixing an oil leak from the front seal and that was just because the old one was a little lose. my neighbor has a chevy 350 in his boat with 700 hours but that took 20 years and hasn't ever been loaded down with ballast.

This certainly isn't the most but we have put 350 hours on our 02 SAN with the 330 hp PCM Excalibur (Chevy 350) in 8 1/2 months. We usually run between 1000 and 2500 pounds of ballast depending on how my knees are feeling. All hours are in salt water and so far so good. My buddy who runs the local wakeboard shop has about 1600 hours on a 2001 ProAir with a 310 hp PCM engine (Ford 351).

One of the worst things a boat can do is sit. Never be scared of hours on a boat, as long as it is well maintained. All the people I know with tournament boats who have thrown rods and had other serious problems use their boats for less than 20 hours/year. We live in PA and put 100+ on a year and NO mechanical problems. Just change the oil every 50hours and go.

My buddies 91 Nautique has 1300 hours on it. We use it every week & he has had no problems. My boat is 89 with 511 hours on it. That is the average amount of hours in the North East, both boats run perfect.

My uncle has a 86 mastercraft with 1700 hours on it and it runs perfectly. I think the only thing he has replaced is the carburator.
