Hey everyone, odd question and its not even very specific.

Im still looking at this one boat, it has 600hrs on it when i drove it it ws turnkey and sounded pretty good, good enough for a 1991 boat atleast.

my concern is say i buy this boat, even if i get a good deal on it. say within a week the tranny goes? how much roughly would i be looking at to replace or fix that?

thanks

-chase

800-1000 for a rebuilt
1200-1600 for new

I recommend Hale Marine in Warsaw VA.
I gave 1135.00 for a NEW 72c Velvet Drive 1:1

Check Skidim.com, they have replacement transmissions brand new for all those 1990 and older boats. Figure you could probably get the transmission rebuilt a lot less.

But I dont think you have anything to worry about. I have over 1500 hours on my nautique and the transmission is still good.

thanks for the quick response Tickle, im in toronto,Canada myself so I dont think id be able to make it there for a tranny, but thank you for suggesting a good price point.

what would be signs towards a failing tranny? could a boat surveyor check a tranny?

I think some good signs would be appearance of the boat and the previous owners. If the previous owner took care of his stuff, chances are the transmission will be ok. 600 hours isn't much on a 1991, especially if fluids were maintained. Other things to check for would be leaking transmission fluid and metal in the oil.

Chase, check for a pause going into gear, slipping etc.. Biggest thing is making sure it is going is full reverse and full forward -- makin hte entire detent... Hale Marine wi'' ship the trans, they have shipped me 3 over the years. Chris Hale is a wonderful person to deal w/ and stands behind his work.

I agree w/ the others, 600 hrs is nothing on a trans....

Well that happened to me this summer. It cost me 1150 and a month and a half of riding to have it rebuild but that said it now runs like a top and has much more whole shot. 2 bad I am moving and have to sale it. Damn the bad luck...:-(
