BEAUFORT, S.C. -- Officials say an alligator bit off part of a golfer's arm as he leaned over to pick up his ball at a private South Carolina course.

The man, who is in his 70s, was retrieving his ball from a pond when the 10-foot alligator bit him at Ocean Creek Golf Course in Beaufort County. The gator pulled the golfer into the pond and ripped off his arm in the struggle. His golf partners were able to free him.

Wildlife workers killed the alligator and retrieved the arm in the hopes it might be reattached.

The man has not been identified. He was being treated at the Medical University of South Carolina, but officials there would not release any information about him.

A call to the golf course was not immediately returned.

hmmmm, I carry about a 3 handicap in golf and there is just certain things you become aware of when being on the golf courses all the time. I remember about 7 years ago flying out to Myrtle Beach to play golf (36 holes a day for 4 days) and there were crocks sometimes sitting on the side of the tee box which was insane. I knew right there that if I hit a ball into the water on any of those courses, that there is no need to even go near or try and dig a few balls out of the water.

The problem with really old people on golf courses is they take more time fishing out balls from the lakes than actually playing golf (it seems). I wonder if he was over there fishing a bunch out and finally got pounced on. Some crazy stuff

With a guy your size why didn't you play a normal sport like football. My mom thought it was too dangerous and wouldn't sign the permission slip. Yea good call.

So there have been no previous encounters with this gator? No signs warning people to just let that $10 Titleist ball go because there's an effin' 10 FOOT ALLIGATOR just hanging out? Hmmmm...
