I was looking around on onlyinboards and I saw a 04 x star with 450 hours on it. I thought that seemed like a ton of hours. My question is how many hours is to many hours on a boat engine?

I always say take a point of reference, like No Cal to So Cal it's like 300 miles and takes, call it, 5 hours (I know but it's a round number)so do the math that's 90 (90 x 5 = 450) trips times 300 miles that's 27,000 miles. Would you consider a 2004 BMW with 27k a lot of miles?

A better question may be how much?

long tooth im not sure how many wake boats are capable of traveling 60mph and thats what youre basing your assumption on. though i think we are comparing apples and oranges lets say you run ur wakeboard boat at 22 mph x 450 hours that gives you 9900 "water miles" if you will.

scott youre looking at roughly 100 hours a season. which isnt a whole lot. still i think hours on an engine in a boat are harder than in a car. stopping to full throttle, repeatedly turning the engine on and off, carrying excessive ballast etc. run a compression test before you buy and if you cant do it take someone that can, you'll also get to see the condition of the spark plugs. again 450 isnt alot but if the motor wasnt cared for, it could be ALOT

I have 715 on mine now and it is an 08' and purring like a kitten. I have done up to 1200 hours in a year. It's not how many hours, it's how it was maintained. If it is taken care of it will run forever. So I wouldn't even think about 450.

My assumption has more to do with the motor running at 2-2500 rpms and aquiring miles while moving the car and trying to convert that to hours not a boat going 60mph.

The 04 x-star was a nice boat, I would look at the seats as Mastercrafts upholstry is an soft spot in their game.

The hours on the boat are actually 325hrs. They want to get 45 for the boat. I'm just weighting do I just kick a couple more grand in and get an 08 vlx. Or make them a sweet little offer on the Xstar.

scott, did you read what travis had to say. he is the master when it comes to driving.....

i have heard of many inboards well over 2500 hrs that were well maintained and running strong.

my best advise would be to have a compression test done on the engine. that will tell you a lot.

when i sold my 05 supra the new owner wanted that done at only 180 hrs and everything checked out.

I'd have to agree with Insuranceman.
I had an I/O that was starting to burn a bit of oil at about 3000. Mind you it had been underwater, but just once. Of course I put on another 4-500 and then bought my inboard.
If you want to wait 10 or 20 years I'll tell you how many hours I get on it.

My current boat has 1700hours on it and still runs like a top. 450 is nothing with if maintained decently.

I'm with the rest of them 450 or 325 which ever it is really isn't much at all. My buddy has 900+ on his 02 and it runs like a top.

45 is too much in this market place, you can get new boats for that price. A V-Ride for sure aybe even bangin' on a VLX or an X-2.

I had 650 on my old '06 SAN and then gave it to my brother. I think he something like 800 on it now. Absolutely no problems.

450 hrs is nothing. Thats only a little over 100 a year and thats not much at all.

Long Tooth I get it, upholstery, soft spot, HAHA.

working at a MC dealer for the past 5 or 6 summers i have observed a large amount of boats from various brands come across me, im with everyone else here- if you maintain it and service it regularly it can last for what seems like forever. We have over 1200hrs on our 01 x-30 and its still running strong. Also keep in mind i run about 4k ballast so its maintaining about 3600-3750 rpm constantly while riding. At the same rate i have seen a few boats at work where the owners have stored them and hardly used them with 300 hours that have problems as a result. I say use your boat as regularly as you can and keep in maintained and 450 hours should seem brand new!

do you have a credible source on that claim? not that i dont believe you, but based on your math my boat is equivalent to 60k mile car. i just dont see this being correct because its a 2001 and has been used a lot- a 60k car is not that much usage. i feel there are too many variables to make this comparison?

I run a service center and that what all the merc pcm and all boat line tell us how to figer it out I am just saying but it depens on how fast you go over the lake or what you are doing at the some time
