DDG Bow
Old    brye            10-06-2004, 6:31 PM Reply
This is a pic from the bridge window of a DDG destroyer she is on. The bow goes out about 100 ft. but you cant see it because the waves are all the way over the bow and the gun mount. Its not a small ship at 508 ft and the bow is about 40 feet above the water. Just submerged in the pic.

This is a pic of waves coming over the rear of the ship

Not related to wakeboarding but thought they were cool.
Guess everyone had trash bags tied to their waist to puke into. These are 35 foot seas.

Oh, man, my bag would be full.

I bet if you go overboard, there's not much anyone can do to save you.

Let her know we appreciate what she's doing and we hope she stays safe.

It's amazing that any boat can roll through that kind of stuff.

Here's a few taken from an offshore oil platform I was on in the North Sea...

Got Photoshop?

Are you asking if I have it or was it used on those pics?

Yes and no are your answers.

Zack,

Someone used photoshop on them. Those first two pictures have the exact same picture of the boat (same angles, shadows, water level on the back, etc but yet are on two totally different ocean sceneries. One of the two is definitely electronically enhanced. The first one is just too fake looking.
Old     (rodmcinnis)      Join Date: Sep 2002       10-07-2004, 11:08 AM Reply
yeah, that first picture looks bogus. What the heck would a tug be doing that close to a fixed object in that kind of conditions?
Old     (raider40)      Join Date: Oct 2001       10-07-2004, 11:52 AM Reply
The tugs or crewboats are delivering supplies and cargo back and forth to Jack-Up oil rigs in the North Sea. It is not uncommon to have those boats out in 10'+ seas.

Keep in mind in the first pic that the air gap between the bottom of the oil rig and the ocean (when calm) is somewhere around 25-30'. As all of us know waves of those magnitudes are not uncommon (hell Ivan produced waves over 65').

Hmmm...let's see...I'd say the first one is the Photoshopped version. The water over the back doesn't even make sense in that picture! The rest of them look perfectly real though.

Photoshopped or no?

Could be real...or could be fake. There's not enough information to tell. It would be a really easy Photoshop job but there's nothing to really indicate that it is.

Mark, I bet you're really anxious to see her get home now. Nice photos, they definately give you that holy shi'ite feeling.

Get back to work and quit putting some many hours on that boat. Your making us people in Washington jealous.

I have hundreds of hurricane pics out to sea. This is the Truman, (about 80-85 feet to the flight deck) in a hurricane a few years back

That 3 water spout photo is not Photo Shopped. I was fishing in the ocean one day and 2 water spouts dropped down. The weird thing about it was that the ocean was calm(just like in that 3 spout picture). We were 50 miles out in a 25 ft Center Console. The fish were going nuts because of the pressure drop. Caught several Mahi Mahi's and a black fin tuna in 20 minutes.

We were within a mile of the 2 spouts and next to a drilling rig. They danced around us and the drilling rig for about 30 minutes and then stopped. We got it all on video.

If the second to last pic is not photo shopped AMAZING that our military would leave a billion $$$ worth of jets to the mercy of the ocean...I think they would have got them out of there!

i have some of the bearing sea I'll post. I need to get them off my computer on the boat.

I have been in similar weather conditions. Looks pretty real to me.

Our boat is small 280' and we still take green
water over the wheelhouse sometimes.

Hope they make a safe return!

The props on this ship are kind of cool (DDG-85). They have little holes in them that they pump air through. The air pumping through the holes changes the "signature" of the prop. That way the bad guys cant figure out what type of ship is comming up on them.
