Just got some 12's to replace 10's
They came in some MDF boxes.
I've taken the carpet off the boxes.
What can I coat the MDF with to
make it a bit better for boat.
I will re-carpet them for looks
but I'm lookin to seal them first.

Also if I need 1 cubic ft. Does it
really matter what the shape is?
I'm thinking of building new boxes
to fit better in my available spaces.

Fiberglass resin is often used to “water proof" wood. You can get it hardware stores.

Shape can matter, but not so that you will hear it in a boat. If you have any long panels I would brace them internally. Also make sure there is about 1.5” of clearance between the vent on the back of the magnet and interior wall of the box (assuming there is a vent)

Sorry, make that at least 1.5" of space between the internal wall and speaker. Some manufactures recommend 3"

I just finished using MinWax Helmans Spar Varnish on a MDF sub box. The can claimed to help wood resist sunlight, rain/moisture and temperature changes. I can't comment on how it lasts until next year, but it was a lot less work than using the fiberglass resin. I put on 5 coats of the stuff, paying a little extra attention to any exposed ends.

Sold.
Just ordered one.
I'll finish the other MDF box
and hide it.
I'll use the MOno enclosure
in front of the drivers feet.

Damn, this stereo addiction is killing me!!

Its sounds so good though. Even had
some piano music playing on Sunday
as we took Grandma for a tour of the lake.
