I heard that Malibu has a totally closed cooling system which is ideal for saltwater use. This means that no salt water is used to cool the exhaust manifolds, unlike the typical closed cooling system that I am familiar with. Is this true? If so, this would be the best option for saltwater use, for sure!

Yes its true. Unlike old freshwatercooling where just the engineblock was cooled with "freshwater", the saltwater edition has cooling for the manifolds as well. Also some other stuff as well such as stainless engine mounts and zink-anodes here and there.

I know a guy who uses his boat in brackish water and his old malibu sure had problems with the salt. His new boat is saltwaterequipped though...

Is that system only on Malibus, or do other Indmar powered boats have that option?

I had my 2000 X star with Inmar motor installed with full closed water cooling system. I run primarilty in salt water and the only thing the salt water touches is the risers which are easy and cheaper to install. Let me know if you have any questions on it. The engine does run hotter with the coolant running through the engine.

hotter is better. more efficient. I think something terrible happens with salt & iron if the water is hot, so boats usually have low thermo's.
