I am having an issue I was hoping someone could help me out with. I can time and hit double ups (usually hit the 1st or 2nd one) but what I can't figure out is the body control while getting booted. Usually when I hit them I start falling on my back and cant seem to keep them on axis. I have tried a mellow, slow edge hoping that would help but so far hasn't. I also try to keep a good body/handle position but the force of the double up seems to throw me out of whack. Anyone have any advice?

My wife was driving the boat the other day and unwittingly gave me her first perfect double-up pull. Hit it solid, landed on my feet, and then went down on my butt.

Usually when I hit them good I'm taken by surprise and immediately start regretting not trying a 360 or a backroll.

Okay I have some good comments on this.

First off, in my boat we hit lots and lots of MASSIVE Upple Dubs. Note the (now sorta famous) shot of Colin Ryan going to space, Attached.

When your hitting a dub and really learning the boot of it your almost better to try and invert or a spin instead of just straight-airing it out. If you snowboard and hit kickers, you will already know that it is easier to spin off a 70 foot kicker than it is to just do a giant straight-air. Same deal on a Dub. Honestly, I always suggest to people just learning to blast off the dub to just try and do a simple grab FS 3. Its a nice starter trick because you can really get the feel of the boot and see the whole landscape as you rotate. Once you get used to getting punted then I say start trying to Blast straight airs into the flats like Necrasson.

Hope that helps a bit.

One other quick note, a lot of the issues I have seen with people getting out of control on Dubs is directly related to how you normally hit the wake, i.e. learning back/forward/whatever. This will be mulitiplied big time when you are doubling up your height and hang time.

Well usually what ends up happening when someone starts hitting dubs is that they get "thrown out the back" into mini raley-esque position(s). If you are getting thrown forward onto your butt (reverse raley) then it sounds like your timing isnt quite there and your a little early on your cut and as a result pushing the board ahead of you to try and still time hitting it even though your not in perfect position.

Personally I prefer to be a bit late in timing a double up than too early. If I am late I can make up with a harder cut at the last minute usually resulting in getting more boot out of it. If I am too early and have to let off my edge I end up casing the wake and regretting things.

Shorter approaches can also help with timing the Dub. I try and take a 10-15 foot approach as opposed to all the way out.

^^^^I Don't recommend the one handed take off for starters.

I hit them like I do any w2w jump. Sometimes have to deal with a little more line slack but if you take off decent you can stay balanced. And yes I too have thoughts of grand spins AFTER I hit a good DUP and wish I would have thought of it sooner.

Hahahahahah yeah Colin Always does that, But you know its not easy to pull a Hoochie to Blind off the Dub, you gotta get the grab right away.

try holding the handle lower than usual - like waist level - or a bit lower.

Great tips guys. I certainly think I am leaning back too much just before I hit the wake. I do end up landing on my butt and my back facing almost to the boat.

I think I need to stand much taller when I hit the double up.

Matt, you will also find that once you start hitting them pretty consistent that it takes a substantial more amount of leg strength (and body strength for that matter) to stand tall all the way through the wake and really utilize the pop.

I can hit them about the same whether I am in "wake shape" or not, but when I am out of shape my height is substantially less simply because my legs buckle more when I dump into the slump and come up the wall of water.
