My truck has a towing capacity of 4800 lbs. Was convinced that I needed a new truck before i purchased a boat, but I've been looking at 205 Prostar's and their weight is listed at 2,660 lbs on NADA. My question, is 2,140 lbs enough of a cushion for trailer, gas and gear? Id rather just buy some new tires and install a hitch than buy a new truck, but don't want to go flying off a cliff on my way to the lake either. I have a '97 Ford F-150, 4.2 V6.

You probably will be ok for surface and flat road driving conditions, but under steep hills and long grades you might run into some slow speeds. I use to tow a 4500 lbs set up with 4.0 explorer 4*4. It did the job but made towing not a great expereince. Not like it ever is though. Anyways good luck and have fun
