I am wondering if in florida it is legal to ride with a non approved vest. The vest is australian approved.

So if you get pulled over you get a ticket.

Yes you will get a ticket if they catch you. Yopu probably wont get stopped while riding, and it wont count toward the 1 pfd per person count on the boat as well.

Where are you? Check your local laws. In Az non-USCG is legal. You merely need to be wearing a flotation device and many other states have the same rules. Google is your friend.

It's only illegal if you get caught.... I've been riding with a outlaw vest for years and have yet to have a problem. It even got checked by the water patrol at boardstock last year and they didn't say a word about legality. I think they were so busy that they just wanted to see me wearing something.

Josh I live in az as well. Question. how well do comp vests keep you afloat versus uscg apvd vests?

I used on and it floated me as good as my cga vest.

Also every law says you must wear a cga vest. How are you going to know if your allowed to wear a non- cga vest.

Can you get in trouble just for having a non-cga approved vest on board.

TJ & Jan- Ask Shaun Murray how well a non coast guard vest will float you when you are knocked out. THEY WON'T!!!!!!!! Not being smart towards Shaun just in reference, I'm sure everyone remembers last year.

What happened last year to shaun. What about wearing a non- cga vest that floats me as good as my cga vest in a 5ftdeep lake with a lifegaurd in the boat.

I know we have been pulled over for a check. Two of us had non approved vests lying on the floor and the cop made a remark about them. Don't remember what the remark was, but we had enough approved vests on board for each person that he couldn't ticket us.

Im a lifegaurd and I rock a ncga vest, floats me fine and i rock the scales at the big deuce00. Just find one right for you. If one will float me (ok) its gotta float you atleast alright.

TJ, When I found out about Az's flotation laws I ran out and bought an A-10. I took a set and found out that my keyring floaty had more flotation than the A-10. So I sold it and am back to riding USCGA. I still hope to some day find a non CGA that still provides plenty of flotation.

Sick boat, btw!

Here is the deal, when you are strapped to your board in the water, most likely a non approved will float you fine. The problem comes in when you are knocked out and your lungs fill with water. Now all the air that helped you stay afloat with the non approved vest is replaced with water, and you no longer float. It really doesnt matter how deep the water is either. by the time you go down, and the boat gets turned around, you could be 20 feet in any direction, unconcious, and on the bottom. Odds are, you will be fine wearing one, but the one time the odds are against you, you can die. Is it worth it to you?

I know this is about ncga, but if someone wants a good cga vest that is not bulky and has the looks of the ncga vests, check out the jetpilot cell block. I just got my hands on one and it is a really nice vest, looks good, and will keep me alive.

someone post links to all that Kordel stuff. changed my view on things. "You cant perform CPR if you cant find the body" while the body may float, you can still drown. But why risk it. Are the non cga's worth possible brain damage or death? not to me. would you trade you'r seat belt for a sick low profile model so you could match it to you'r iluminated valve stems? If it is proven to save lives, and there are models that have shrunk in size in the last ten years, why is it so important to loose that little extra floation? Do inverts and spins require that much more movment? Maybee I just suck to much to comprehend this whole concept...

In Micigan - you only need to have the approved vewt in the boat (1 for each person in the boat plus the skier(s)). That said, I wear an Outlaw while doing watersports.
