is it worth paying the extra money for this option, exactly what does it do, increase engine life or prevent corrosion?

If the boat was going to be run in salt water all the time, you would need it, otherwise not really needed.

would it extend the life of engine or prevent problems

I would say so regardless...

More controlled condictions within the motor, a must for saltwater driving, less chance of debris getting caught in the block and causing a blockage, easier maintenance, more predictable wear/failure/replacement of parts...better resale value!

just my $.02

We boat on fresh water 100% of the time and with the LQ-9 we had no option of a hot shower. Not like you need it much in Texas, but as stated before totaly not a thought unless you boat in salt/brackish stuff.

It will help prevent problems which will inevitably increase engine life. 1300 sounds about right. I have one installed on my 04 Mobius as I run exclusively in salt. I would also recomend you get a flush kit installed, about $65.00. This will help extend the life of your risers and manifolds providing you flush after each use.
