My buddy has an '02 X-30 on the stock Mastercraft trailer. Yesterday the breaks would not disengage when we went to back it up. He has the 5-pin light plug on his Denali. We even put the stop in to prevent the neck from sliding back and nothing worked. Any ideas?

sounds like the brake cord got pulled. Push the release inside the tongue area to release the fluid pressure. Does the trailer roll forward OK if not its the brake saftey cord. My two cents.

The trailer rolls forward fine. It would even back ok on a level surface. It was only when we were backing it up his driveway that it started to give us grief. It has done this before. Only before we were backing the empty trailer down the ramp to pick up the boat...

When I first bought my '05 X-2, I was towing it with an '01 F-150, and I was having the same problem. It turns out that my truck didn't have a certain fuse in the fuse box under the hood, that was required to release the brakes when backing up. I added the fuse and never had that prob again. If your trailer has worked properly before, then maybe you just have a blown fuse somewhere. Just an idea, hope this helps, sorry I cant be more specific, it was a while ago...

I too have a MC trailer, I was wondering why do you have to have it plugged into your vehicle when backing the trailer up and is there a by-pass for this?

Ryan is correct. Some vehicles required a relay to actuate the reverse function in the towing wire harness.

Check your ground wire. It can cause issues if it's not solidly attached.

I had this problem on a previous vehicle a few times and it seemed I'd have to cycle it in and out of reverse a couple times to get it to kick in.

Bryan, There is a lock-out solonoid that is actuated by the reverse signal in your towing wire harness. Put your vehicle in reverse and it tells the brakes system not to clamp down.

In emergency situations, just to back up the trailer when the brakes do not disengage, turn the trailer electrical connector around and turn the truck lights on. That should light up the backup lights and disengage the brakes. Don't forget to switch the plug around again before going on the road.
