Okay so its time to bite the bullet and replace the blown motor in my CC Martinique.

What I need: Remanufactured (note: not rebuilt)454 Reverse rotation long block.

I have been looking long and hard at using Rhino as they are fairly reputable and offer a nice two year unlimited hour warranty.

Price=3400 delivered.

I have to ship (or drive myself) the boat from WI to CA, and also pay for the cost of labor to install the new motor and re-install the Perfect Pass.

Its a big financial burden for me and is over half of what the boat is worth after all is said and done.

If there is ANYONE who knows of a good price on this motor, or wants to work some kind of deal in the Northern CA or Northern NV area on a hardwood floor install we could trade for parts, labor, or both.

Any other advice is appreciated.

Have you tried Skidim for a replacement engine yet, I know they had some pretty good prices when I had to change out my Pro Boss GT40 in my SAN. I ended up going through the dealer though since they installed it and i got the warranty back on it, it wasn't cheap and I was only 4 hours away,10k when it was all said and done.

Good luck with this I know what you are going through.

Wakepirate owns a shop in Roseville and I wouldn't take my boat or car anywhere else. Give him a call... ask for Marc 916 789-0303

go with a rebuilt. They are just a reliable as the new and you can get it cumstom ordered with better than stock parts and still save $$

I know it's not a long block but you may want to check it anyway

Phillip the differance between "rebuilt" and "remanufactured is significant in quality and not so much in price.

"new" is VERY expensive and that is not where I am going with it.

What is the difference with remanufactured and rebuilt. I am curious?

Leo:

Rebuilt= replace "what broke" along with a few other wear items.

Remanufacture= replace all parts and return to "original manufactur specifications".

It is a question of both quality and doing things right, if I am going through the trouble of changing out engines the one I put in I want to last forever, or at least close to it.

Plus, remanufactured engines have much better warranties.

Someone else might be able to explain it better.

Don't forget to mention that the engine you are replacing had been 'rebuilt' and blew with less then 50 hours on it!

So remanufactured means replacing pistons, gaskets, seals, cam, timing chain, and rings?

Thats what I thought a rebuilt was. Well I guess I will be remanufacturing my engine, not rebuilding it, this summer.

leo, you'll have a new engine when you're done with it. the 'bu engine?

Mike, pretty good price rhino's BB. I know your martinique is setup for a BB and not sure if it would save you any money, but wouldn't a small block with the right prop do the trick? may not save much upfront, but i think fuel and oil efficiency could add up. that said, nothing sounds like 454...

Nacho, the Martiniques with the smaller engine had a hard time with holeshot and I like to throw around some wait, the big block is a rare gem.

Gordon, cmon....

I put at least 100 hours on it LOL. I suspect a bought a boat with a "repaired" (read=welded) block that re-cracked

Did you have the engine inspected before you bought it? I'm not trying to be a smart guy, just trying to look out for my future purchase.

Jasper looks to be about 4K reman, but you might be able to do a more local install.

I didnt have it inspected, the seller did agree to it, but I drove to CO to buy the boat and just wanted to get home, my bad.

Jasper and Rhino seem to be the well reputed engines, I just keep hoping I can get away with this cheaper or cut a deal with someone on the labor.

well best of luck getting it done and enjoying the summer. I did the same thing you did when i bought mine. just wanted to get her home. well, 2 new manifolds and risers and a list of other crap and i was finally on the water 3 months after i bought the boat.

Nah, the bu engine is fine, nacho.

It is the nautique with 1300 hours that I want to clean up and make new again.

Mike, have you ever considered having the engine in the boat re-built by a reputable shop. I understand the difference between rebuilt and re-manufactured, but a quality rebuild should go thousands of hours without a problem if the right parts are used. A re-builder for a big block shouldn't be all that hard to come by.

Mike, talk to a racing engine rebuilder in your area. You might very well get to trade retail for retail on the hardwood and rebuild and you would probably get a very good 454. I don't know who is in WI but there will be some. You can get 600 reliable Hp out of that but that would cost more than your budget. Just an idea.

Art I am in CA.

Evan, I believe the block is cracked.

You better check the core return policy on a remanufactured engine. Most want accept a cracked block and the core could run another $1500.

gotcha....

Mike,
Call Performance Machine in Manteca, CA ask for Walt, Tell him Allen Bischofberger told you to call. He has builyt many engines for my family. They are marine builders and really cheap. He built me a built small block for under 2000.00.
Also I agree with George you need to check the core return policy, but even so I think that 3500 sounds a bit high for a stock long block.
Good luck

Rhino is 3200 with no core charge, I looked into that.

Al, I will do that, thanks.
