Need some help (How to play a DVD-R for handycam)

I am not savvy when it comes to the mini discs and camcorders. I have a Panasonic VDR-D100 that takes the mini discs. The discs I have are JVC DVD-R double sided. Now when I hook the camera up to the computer I can't get the video to play nor will the files appear so that I can copy the files to my computer. Also the disc itself will not play in the hard drive. What is the deal?
