Thanks for posting the pics Steve... And helping with the build! This has been a fun, and relatively cheap, project so far... I'm pretty anxious to get it finished so we can give it a try. Anyone in the San Diego area wanting to give it a try will be more than welcome... As long as you chip in for gas! Hahaha, just kidding, but you'll all be more than welcome to winch with us, anytime. Kung Fu, Just like our Kegerator project... Some things were "acquired" through my work. We don't know how much is there, but we're guessing about 1000'! -Blake

Looks nice and beefy. How much does that weigh and are you going to put handles on the side of it to make it easier to lift into place on the receiver?

Blake, That's a big, fat motor also. Looks like it will do the trick. Let me know if you are interested in that handle also. Can't wait to try it out. Let's set it up in my front yard!

CAR, It's not that heavy, despite the bulky look... I have no clue what it weighs, on a scale. I'll weigh it when it's done. There are plans for handles, and axle slots, to help move it around easier. BigEd, Yeah, I think 1000' feet will do ! You can bet that I'll bring it with me if we make that Delta trip we were talking about... Then you can give it a try, too. -Blake

Buzz, Geoff hooked me up with a handle... So I won't need to steal yours! The big fat motor was a just in case measure. I doubt we'll need all that power, but it'll be nice to have. I was wondering if we should use it at that place behind your house... Think they'd mind? -Blake

Blake, That lake would be great, but I have heard that they are pretty particular about who uses it. Guess I need to maybe get them buzzed, and chat a bit! Oh, BTW, tell the owner of that X Terra - "Nice Ride". Ha! I hardly remember being inside of it!

Sweet! I got a compliment on my ghetto-mobile truck! Thats the last thing I was expecting from this thread. CAR, I do want to put at least one handle and some wheels on the winch. I think all said and done, it will weigh in the 90-110 lb range (thats really just an estimate). It is super beefy, but I wanted it to be, with all that torque. We decided on a bigger motor (i told blake 9-10) and we ended up with 13! So we should be able to tow in boats if they run outta gas (hell we could probably pull a rider behind it too!! ) We will definitely have pics from the testing sessions. If I had to guess, I'd say we've got between 1000' and 1500' of line, so we should get longer runs than most of the other winches out there too. 13hp is plenty power to do deep water starts too. -Steve

Dane, You can buy winches from several different companies, here's an example: http://www.wakeworld.com/getarticle.asp?articleid=100. That's a nice winch, but, it's a little out of my budget. All in all, manufactured winches are pretty pricey... I believe the cheapest I've seen is $1500. Steve and I are always looking for new projects, and this was something we've both wanted to do for a while. BigEd, Good point! Just replace "if" with "when," that should clarify any misunderstandings... Oh, Steve is my partner in crime, plus, we're skinny bastards... You can make some more room, right? Buzz, It's not that big of a deal, just thought I'd run it by you. By the way, Megan is super happy about her new car... But, she's ready to kill the guy who got sand all over the back seat! -Blake

Thanks for all the compliments... I hope it continues to look good, as the build progresses! Steve is putting some final finsh thoughts together... I'm sure it'll clean up to be a great looking final product. Shawn, I think the 1st thing I'm doing (after we finish) is building a kicker, and a small rail. I have the same amount of desire for those two, as I do for the winch. BigEd, Steve was in, all along, he just didn't know it. Hannah, Admit it, you think we're talking about playing with that other thing, which also starts with the letter "W" right? -Blake

Yeah man, I made a little progress today. I was able to tack down the base plate, and got a pretty good start on the mount for the engine (still needs holes)... I don't know how much I'll get to work on it tomorrow, the Navy has decided that I need to work all weekend... Booo! No new pics, not much more is done from the above pics. -Blake

Well so far so good. Everything's together and appears to be working just perfectly. The true test will come on it's maiden voyage to the water. I think I ended up using about 1200 ft of line (it's hard to estimate, but I went up and back on the street 3 and a half times, so it should be around there). I want to make sure everything works right on it before I tear it down and prep and paint it, then it will be FINISHED!!!! -Steve

First off great work. Just a few questions 1 how long did it take start to finish? 2 did you go through a go cart suply shop? 3 Where is the brake? I just tried out the grinch winch and it is not that good if your 200lb+

1) Just a couple weekends (if you're pretty good at fabricating) 2) Ebay, but a kart shop would carry all the parts too. 3) None, but I would like to put in a disc brake. Blake's just being cheap I am totally convinced this will deep-water start a 300+ pound rider. Torque baby!!!! -Steve

DAMN... Look at that spool! It's going to take forever to un-reel it that far. Steve, think we could winch the entire course at San V? Greg, To help Steve answer your questions... 1) This can be a very quick project, but if you're bargain hunting, it'll take a little longer. If I still lived in San Diego, Steve and I could've easily busted this out in a weekend, if we had all the parts. 2) Ebay is the way to go, for a project like this... A go-kart shop will have almost everything you need, but you'll save $$$ if you ebay. 3) A brake is the only thing I didn't have in mind, in the beginning. Steve brought it to my attention, I just haven't incorporated it yet... I'm too anxious to give it a try, to prolong the maiden voyage! -Blake

The ol' yeller rope was actually coated cable. Didnt work well, and snapped on the 2nd pull. That pretty much sums up the trial run, the first pull was too slow, the 2nd snapped the line about 500 or so feet in. It was epic until the rope snapped though . I haven't seen any good spools of rope on ebay, but I'll keep my eyes open. -Steve
