Now that we have close-toed bindings in abundance, I'm wondering how long until we start to get the full step-in setup. I've seen pro skiers who had 'hard' boots that snapped into the skis...and would come off on hard falls. I'm not sure I'd want that on a board unless they 'both' came off (but never just one), but I'm thinking the idea might cater to some boarders out there.

I don't really see the advantage of having step-in boots for wakeboarding. I understand how they can be good for snowboarding/skiing because once you take your board or skis off you walk around in your boots, but when you're done wakeboarding you just want to be in your bare feet (at least I do.) The only thing I can really think of step-ins helping would be if two riders with different size feet used the same board and had to switch in and out. Just IMO though.

step in set ups aren't even that popular in snowboarding anymore. They're good for a person who just wants to get in and out of their board fast, but they don't compare, performance wise, to a "strap" set up.

You don't have to 'unstrap' a wakeboard to get on a chairlift or anything, and bindings nowadays aren't even that difficult to get into.
I don't see it happening.

Only reason I could see it being any good is for storage. You chould stack a lot more boards on top of eachother in racks if the boots came off. Still, I think it's a dumb idea.

I also think that the stiffer, higher bindings that don't release in a crash are a dumb idea. I think we'll see a lot more ankle, foot and leg injuries from these setups. I know in a hard crash I want my board to come off.

Slalomers have already been going away from the "hardshells". They've broken more bones than added bouys, and notorious for ankle injuries. The only use in skiing any more is the few who rely on their toe-trick ski pass for points. The problem is you want to set a high tension point for release so they don't accidentally release, but that increases the likelihood of injury.

My ribs are wishing that I came out last week, ate the wake on toe 5, didn't come out very painful.

I got a pair of K2 Cinch snowboarding bindings this winter and they are awesome. They're pretty much like the Hinge tech on CWB boots. You don't have to do the straps every time, just do the hinge. They are just as secure as normal strap ins but have the convenience of step-ins.
