...and you rub it in with a rag. Quite simple.

Go to your boat dealer for the Teak Oil, don't get the varnish type stuff at the hardware store.

Put on lots and let it soak in. Keep putting it on until it does not soak in any more. It might take a couple of days to put on enough coats.

First I would put on a 2 part cleaner and brightener. One of the brands is Teak wonder. Use both of these with a stiff bristled brush. then after it is really clean and dry use a bunch of teak oil with a rag.

I agree with Brett. Use the cleaner and brightener, it makes a difference. Below is the before, cleaned/brightened, and the final 5 oil coat view of my swim deck.

Use a brush (medium bristle) with the cleaner; you can see the one I used on the floor in the second photo.

So you lightly sand it then apply lots of oil? My teak is very dull and weathered looking.

Duffy, I usually don't sand unless it is a real weather beaten piece of teak.

An option that is a little more lasting is a product from Sikkens called Cetol.

It takes a decent amount of prep, but done properly, it really lasts:

Sand the deck.
Use the two part brighter / restorer product.
Wash and dry, then sand again to remove the raised grain.
Get some full strength acetone and, (using rubber gloves) an rag and start wiping the teak. You want to keep applying acetone and flipping the cloth until the brown residue quits accumulating on your rag. that means you have removed all the natural oils from the deck surface.
Quickly brush on a coat of the Cetol. Now you have it sealed, and since you got the oils off of the surface with the acetone soaked rag, the Cetol will actually stick.
Brush on two more coats, at "just past sticky" intervals. You might be satisfied with three coats, or now you can lightly sand and put on two more.
Add a coat annually; 3 to 5 coats for a base should not wear through for most typical use.

I use foam brushes with real good results, and just throw them away after application.

The beauty of Cetol compared with traditional varnish or polyurethane is that it still allows the wood to breathe, and usually will not peel like varnish. that being said, the acetone part is critical, or the finish will not stick, due to the high oil content in the wood.

Here are some pics of some of the teak brightwork on my sailboat. The grab rails are recently finished. The hatch rails just behind the grab rails have a year-old coat.

why not line-x or rhino line?!?! I saw one that was and it was super durable, looked good, and to my understanding is lifetime guaranteed. Must a missed a post on this but whats the Negatives?

I have a friend that bought a used Malibu and it was all ready Rhino Sprayed and it looks pretty durable. I think Teak looks nicer, but it takes some up keep.

I have a friend who had line x spray his deck and its nice, doesn't scratch boards or people, only thing I don't like is I can't scoot my board with me on it as easily into the water, I have to hop a little, on my teak I just duckwalk it off the plank. Teak can be a pain to keep up but looks great when done properly, I have no plans to line x mine, I likea the teak...its classy

I use a product called Sikkens. Leaves the nice teak look but requires a 1/4 of the maintainance. I throw silica grit in on the 2nd coat to give it some traction. I just have to refinish it around 1.5 seasons. I will try and get some pics. Stuff works great and keeps a much more "just finsihed teaking" look and requires very little upkeap if any at all.

You can get it in a dark teak, light teak or natural teak color

If you use teak oil make SURE it does not have polyurethane in it like Nate said in 3rd post. I use Mineral Oil, it will not mold and is safe for the fishies, you can eat this stuff. It is what you are suppose to put on chopping boards/blocks.

Yeah ok,

Teak looks so good with the way the newer wakeboats are going....(im being sarcastic). A teak platform fits right in with all of the awesome graphics, polished aluminum, chrome, sound systems, custom ballast systems, etc., etc., going on now (still being sarcastic). Teak is a thing of the past.

Maybe if there were other parts of the boat made of teak.....THEN that outta place doo doo brown platform might fit in. Don't get me wrong, nicely done wood is classic looking...maybe for me to walk on in my house...but come on, are we driving Model A (or T) boats?

I get this feeling that most of these older teak lovers out here on this site (or if young - used to ride in when they were growing up) used to have one of those wood grain paneled dodge caravans.....yeah sweet looking ride....real cool.

Out with the old, in with the new....let me know how it goes when you have to stain that thing....every other year or so.

I probably would not recommend Cetol. The stuff is really really durable thats true which is why its used on a lot of sailboats. I have experience with this as my dad owns a sailing school. Cetol is on all the teak for the boats that are used for classes and racing. It does need to get reapplied every couple years though (maybe not as often if covered) and to do so you have to strip it off. Its hell. Its the worst job ever. I personally clean my teak a couple times a year when I wash the boat and dont seal it. My teak is almost a blonde color and I think it just looks awesome. I might oil it this season though. My dad said I could cetol it if I want to but we both agreed it isn't worth it on a boat with original teak that is 23 years old and still in great shape. Oh and my experience with Cetol on teak seats (in a boston whaler) is it makes them slick. Fine if you are sitting but not standing on them like a swim platform.

I don't care how much wax you apply to fiberglass over time it will splinter and ruin your life.

Dude Jeff, so they dont like what you did to your teak...get over it. Did you do it for you or for everyone else? If you like it then who cares. I got a good laugh at calling those mohogany boats teak. Then I realised that the boaton whaler seats were mohagany too lol. So I wanted to correct myself.

That MC deck looks awesome bbeach. Looks slick though, is it? Any more pics of it?

Its not anymore slick than a teak deck freshly oiled - and no oil residue gets all over your gear.

Since that photo was taken I've added a teak transom protector - let me see if I have any photos of it.

My 87 Supra SunSport has 87 feet or 2" teak strips throughout. Looks awesome but would be great if renewed. The swim deck is teak and will always be teak. If you coat it once a year it's awesome.

I've never had any teak that was slicker than wet gel coat, and I've never had teak that got oil on any gear. I've only had teak on boats for thirty years so I might have missed something.
My boat sits in the water constantly for two months and I oil the teak in the off season and rub it once in the summer. Anyone who wants to rhino line should sell theirs after they made a plywood copy to cover. It would pay for the lining.

Someone needs to clear up some rusty spots in their uneducated mind as to what a tree hugger is. Better yet here it is:

"An environmentalist, especially one who supports the preservation of forested land and the restriction of logging."

I don't think that applies here, so you can quit with the tree hugger comments and "out with the old in with the new". I am sorry you got bashed for coating your platform in the other thread but you don't have to respond by being redundant and adding nothing to the thread.
Old     (pwningjr)      Join Date: Apr 2007       03-30-2009, 2:33 PM Reply
The only thing that I have to add to this thread is that if you maintain your teak properly you only have to do it about once to twice a season (if that, depending on usage):

1.teak cleaner with brushing
2.(optional) "brightener"
3.teak oil

Only sand if the teak has been neglected for a long time. Besides leaving the deck rather slippery, eventually the screws will poke through!

EDIT: P.S. I'm with the NO LINE-X crowd. I cant imagine covering up a nice teak platform!

Truth is linexing teak is a copout. If you don't like teak you should sell your deck and get a glass one.
Its bedliner not deck finish and even if thats what you want do it on a piece of plywood not five hundred worth of teak.

Line x = ghetto bootleg

Looks great Adam. Remember to keep adding oil until it quits soaking in. Wipe off the excess so you don't get a gum build up on the surface.

Mike is right. Transmission fluid works great. A nice deep red shinny look.

But I am of the school of don't touch it, let it turn grey. Use it and when you sell it bring it back to new condition.

I power wash mine first- then sand , lightly rinse the sanding particle off, let dry, then oil it 4-5 times over 2 days. it lasts all year with maybe a refresher coating mid year. I almost went with fiberglass when I bought my boat, but opted not to as I heard a number of stories about people who lightly bumped a dock or another boat with the step and it cracked the glass- teak looks cool anyway!
Old     (blindmnkee3)      Join Date: Aug 2001       03-31-2009, 4:15 PM Reply
These guys obviously don't know what teak is worth. The stuff is crazy expensive when compared to other woods. If you want a Line-X platform, for heaven's sake build one and sell the teak.

I love the teak look but it doens't fit the new boat styles. But, how about the Byerly 210 with the burned Byerly insignia into the teak, SWEET!!!

I'm really sorry for bothering you, I don't know why i thought "TEAK DECK, WHAT TO PUT ON IT" was a good place to find pictures of teak decks with different applications on them but i feel like a fool.
