I77 Runs through lake Norman right above Charlotte but its not smithville. Cornelius Mooresville and Stateville is what it runs. Lake Norman is killer for the 4th. Lots of nice little fingers for butter!!

Is it Lake Norman?

Hyco Lake is fun for 4th of July. They have a campground or houses for rent on the lake and a few fire work displays on the water too.

I wouldn't say norman is good on any weekend, much less a holiday weekend. I was out on memorial day and it was like an ocean. During the week its pretty nice and you can get good butter 7am-11am on the fingers during the weekend, but after that it's pretty worthless to try to board.

Our house up there is going to be a rental eventually, but I don't see it happening before the 4th. Check out http://lakenormanvacations.com, we used them for rentals the last few years. Better hurry for the weekend of the 4th though, the places book fast.

So where is Hyco Lake?

Hyco is north of Raleigh, near the VA border.

Pretty much any body of water in NC will be worthless for wakeboarding on a holiday weekend, but the 4th lands mid week this year so you may be ok.

If you want to just ride and sleep, I wouldn't come to Norman unless you want to board before 9:00 am and after 8:00 pm. If you want to party, definately there is no substitute. The tie ups at the North of the lake (Close to Charloote,Cornelius) are awesome. There are a lot of restaurants and bars on the water. It depends on what you want. You could go south to the river and wakeboard then go back north to have fun.

There are plenty of good spots to ride in NC. check out www.endofropegang.com . I am sure someone can tell you a few secret places to ride on any big lake in NC that week.

Duffy, It's called the Catawba river chain which include Lake Norman, Mountain Island Lake and Lake Wylie (among others). The lakes were made by damming the river so there are river sections on the north end of each just below the dams.

If you decide to come to the area let me know.
