Is this possible? Does anyone know if the stock Chevrolet Tahoe, Silverado, and Suburban stereos have an RCA aux input in the back on the head unit?? I ask only because there is an aux button on the face. It has to be for something.

I doubt it, but I'm wondering if I can plug my ipod into the back via RCA. I was hoping someone could tell me before I tear my dash apart.

Good question... I was considering doing the same. I don't really dig the FM transmitters.

yup, its possible!

the 97 stock head unit (cd player) that comes in the LT models has an aux input in the rear. my dad has his burb all wired up for an mp3 player. not sure if this is the same unit as the current models, but im sure it still has aux inputs. the dash isnt terribly difficult to take apart, just be careful. it kinda just pops off.

Thanks, sounds like a good weekend project. I have an LT3, I might just take it apart this weekend and run to FRY's to pick up whatever cable I need.

BTW... Jarrod, try not to disconnect the power on the head unit otherwise you will need a trip to the deler to reset the security on the HU.
Thanks Scott.

remember to go to the car audio accessory area to get the headphone to l/r RCA cable. it'll be about 400,000 times less expensive than the cutesy white ipod one, and you wont have to worry about stashing the white cable that screams "I HAVE AN IPOD INSIDE MY UNATTENDED VEHICLE!!!!!!!!" every time you leave.

Exactly! That is why I love Fry's! They have the 3 dollar black cable as an alternative to the $29.95 white IPOD cable!

I have a 2003 Tahoe with steering wheel controls. I added a PAC auxiliary adapter and I can use the source switch on the steering wheel to switch on the aux input RCAs for my IPOD or XM Roady. It was about $70, they also make a $100+ unit that allows song skipping from the steering wheel controls, I didn't think it was necessary.

There is also a company called USA link or something like that that makes aux input and controls that allow complete IPOD interface with factory radios.

I have a '97 Yukon with the cassette head unit with the seperate in dash factory single cd player. I wonder if the cd player uses up the inputs. Anybody know?

Daniel

Thanks guys!

I hope everyone is right. It's been expensive already trying to get my ipod hooked up in three cars, a boat, and home stereo.

I picked up a monster cable to hook up the headphone jack to RCA adapter. I'll post pictures.

Good question, Daniel. I suspect that factory input is not an RCA...maybe someone knows.

Scott, I would be interested in learning how your dad hooked it up. It appears as though you need one of these.

There are no RCA inputs on the back on the factory unit. They have to be convertered via "Auxiliary Input Converter."

Jarrod, what year is the tahoe? I have installed the usaspec pa-11 gm on my 06 silverado and I am thoroughly impressed by it.

did you pay 150 for yours? For that price I might as well buy a new head unit with a lot more iPod functionality.

usaspec.com is the company's website. You would need the pa-11 gm 45. I got mine around $100. I think I found it on sale a certain site, then went to cardomain.com and they beat it with their 105% price guarantee deal.
The thing that I like about it versus other ipod interfaces that I looked into is that the usaspec does not lock out the ipod, but you are still able to skip songs using the head unit or the steering wheel controls. In addition, it adds a set of rca inputs, perfect for plugging my portable dvd player.

You guys got it. Mine was a PIE adapter (not PAC), found used on Craigslis for $40. The other I saw was the USAspec. I decided I didn't need the second RCAs and the skip features via the steering wheel.

Does anyone know if a 2005 Silverado will have RCA jacks in the back? I do have an AUX option on the head unit, so I'm assuming it does. I'd be pretty surprised if they didn't provide something like that.

Dave,
Unfortunately that head unit does not have rca inputs. That aux is for a changer or other external source.
