Special X-Games End In Extreme Tragedy October 27, 2005 | Onion Sports LOS ANGELES—Event organizers and promoters are as yet unable to explain to the satisfaction of law-enforcement officials how Ricky Creston, a 10-year-old Down syndrome sufferer, was put in a position that lead to his death on Tuesday, the final day of events at the first-ever Special X-Games. "Creston, who was competing in the Best Freestyle Motocross Trick event, evidently panicked and began flailing his arms in response to the motorcycle's loud noise, losing control of the Honda CRF230 to which he had been strapped, and died shortly after in a collision with another special athlete," LAPD officials announced yesterday. "Special X-Games organizers apparently thought they had taken every precaution possible, outfitting Creston with a life jacket in case he careened into the nearby wakeboarding pool, but failed to take into account the proximity of the skateboarding half-pipe." Creston also critically injured a developmentally disabled boy who, apparently deafened by the crowd and the Limp Bizkit music blaring through the arena speakers, was sitting in the bottom of the half-pipe and happily spinning the wheels of his skateboard during the Men's Big Air event. "Although Ricky is gone, his extreme legacy will live on forever, unlike our partnership with Mountain Dew," said event organizer Steve Wynlan, adding that all they wanted was to show the special athletes that they could still have a rad lifestyle. A spokesman for the LAPD stated that, although he had seen youth culture exploited before, the Special X-Games were nearly as bad as the Vans Warped Tour. There is no way that is a real news story. I live in LA and never heard a thing about it. I will be the first to say it... Wow, that is funny.

You probably didn't hear anything about it because it really reflects a bad image on "extreme sports" and they did their best to "cover" it up. I don't think this sugar coating and sheltering the public from the truth is all that necessary. Everyone knows these types of sports are inherently dangerous and this story is a painful reminder of those dangers. I feel sorry for the families of those involved.

yeah. its totally fake. The Onion is a satirical newspaper that actually gets printed and distributed. I guess its easy to get fooled when you dont know that its out there though. this same headline was right underneat "WNBA Draft to Double As Bachlorette Auction", come on now. The paper is really funny, but whats funnier is that people actually think its real sometimes, like the four people that posted above us. (Message edited by dmcguirt23 on October 28, 2005)

There's about 15 different things that make it look fake, even starting with the title - I don't think a real report would use a cheesy oun when talking about a tragedy like this! Pete

i agree with kellan, bad enough to strap him to something that powerful, but with down syndrome, makes it twice as stupid, they have a good cause, but went about it the wrong way

The onion is a satirical paper, but not all of their stories are fake. This one, for example, is true (however I think they got some facts a little mixed up). They had a quick story on this yesterday on my local ABC news channel (KGTV). I'll post a link to their story if I can find one... -Steve (Message edited by kingskrew on October 28, 2005)

Actually mike, I think it was based out of madison. Now I think most, if not all of the operations are located in NYC. My brother actually used to do some freelance work for them while he was in college. he didn't get paid at all because they didn't have any money...but it's pretty damn cool to me.

Oh come on, lighten up! It's satire, the target of the humour is not the subject (in this case the mentally and physcially challenged)but the self righteous and overly sensitive readers who take themselves way too seriously! I think the joke is actually on many of you!

I used to love dirt bikes but I had to stop going to my local dirt track. I would always take my kids there until these guys dressed in black with tourette's syndrome started showing up. Every time they would jump the 30 foot gap they'd be yelling random profanities at everyone around them. Even though I was drunk at the time, I still didn't think it was a good environment for my children to be around.

I happen to spend 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week around children with Mental Illness} and Developmental Delay and Disorder so I just don't see the humor in it. Tourrette Syndrome is a really hard thing for a child or an adult to deal with. Forgive me for not getting the joke.

You are forgiven but I don't think this is anything to joke about, Melissa. Perhaps his developmental delay resulted in little Ricky's horrible lack of judgement in choosing a CRF 230 for this event. Everyone knows you need at least something as powerful as a 2 stroke CR 250 to do these tricks!!

OK -- halfway thru the story I found myself wanting to chuckle -- and then sternly telling myself that it was inappropriate to laugh at these kids with special needs. What a relief to see it was an Onion article!
