I have a stupid question..What is the proper way to cross an on coming boats wake so that you dont beat the crap out of the people riding in the bow?

Slow down & turn almost parallel to the wake, heading away from the other boat.

I typically will try to approach the wake parallel, slow just a bit, then when in the first trough, turn into the wake at a 45 degree angle then feather the throttle a bit to keep the bow up and from dipping into the second trough.

Try to approach the rollers as a ramp, when you hit the top of the trough floor it! You should fly right over the rest of them onto nice smooth water.
