Would someone be willing to explain to me what would be envolved in making one of these. Like all the parts needed and such. Thanks!

Hear hear!!! Paul, you beat me to the punch... I was wondering the exact thing just yesterday!

I mean I understand how it works and such, I just want clear direction on what is needed!

I would say just look at a gocart. It works almost the exact same way.

I think it would only be like 300 dollars cheaper if you build your own. Which if you include the work you put in it, it might be easier just to buy one. The engine itself gets up there, plus welding can be a hassle sometimes.

Building the whole thing should not take more than 10 hours if you know what you are doing. If you have the steel and the skills to do it, its a piece of cake. Here is mine before I paint it, very simple. I did change the front sprocket, it was too small. I will be winching all day for a few bucks:-)Upload

Did you use the winch yet? How did it work? What are all the specifications? What size engine is, sprocket size, etc...?
Thanks

melvinator... that is sweet, how much did it cost you?

What HP is that engine?
Old     (melvinator)      Join Date: Apr 2001       04-17-2006, 10:36 AM Reply
6.5 hp, you can't deepwater start with the clutch we have, you have sit on a chair or kind of do a running start with a wakeskate. Cost was around $300 with the rope, but the steel was free. Here are the links

Steel tubing came from scrap yard and was bent by heating it up. Spool is made from 2 old table saw blades with a 1” bore and the middle is 5 ½” od tubing from scrap yard. Shaft is 1” steel bar. All free

Being a shop teacher: Priceless
If you have access to a welder, cutting torch, grinder and metal cutting bandsaw and the skills to use them it’s a piece of cake. Just get some buds to go in on the parts and start winching.

These 2 videos make it look awesome, I live in a farming community with tons of small ponds. Plus I am only 30 minutes from Lake Michigan. I can't wait to throw a huge tantrum out on the big lake.

Mathew,

That chain is loose. Have you had any problems with that?

That was our first attempt, I will post some pics of the near finished product soon.

is a 6.5hp engine powerful enough? Its just that all the ones ive looked at on the net seem to use an 8hp engine. The 6.5 is allot cheaper than the 8hp so if you think its sufficient i might just look at getting the smaller one.
Old     (melvinator)      Join Date: Apr 2001       04-18-2006, 8:27 AM Reply
If you want to deepwater start you might want an 8 hp. You can put a torque converter on a 6.5 and have less into it than 8 hp with a cheaper clutch. If you have a bigger engine use that.

I want to see someone try an air trick on a winch. I've been thinking about it. It doesn't seem like it would be hard to do a air backroll with a winch like you can on the cables.

Did you put non-streach rope on it? if so how much did that cost and where did you get it?

Any more pictures Matthew!?!! I think your machine looks awesome, props to you.

600 ft of line about $80 http://www.reddenmarine.com/site/new-detail.cfm?id=AMRAMSTL764

Don't know about air tricks, I live about 30 min from lake michigan and I am looking forward to hitting some big waves. I built it mainly to hit rails with and wakeskate. I will post pics of the updated winch tomorrow.

so would therebe a way to fix that problem and make it to where u can do a deep water start.. would a bigger engine help.... or is it only the clutch
Old     (melvinator)      Join Date: Apr 2001       04-18-2006, 11:53 AM Reply
You can buy one of these and it will pull deepwater starts easy. Its a bit of $ though. I will bring a chair/dockstart or take a running start with a wakeskate before I shell out more money. I don't think many people are deepwater starting w/ winches anyway. Mine will have 600 feet of rope and there is no way I am swimming out that far to be pulled to shore. I just want to session little ponds and such.Upload

I'm confused... When would it be necessary to deep water start with a winch? Unless the body of water dropped off really quick, you'd have to be dropped off by a boat or jetski... Or, you'd have to swim out, right? That'd mean you have to swim out, carrying your board, and pull the line out at the same time... Not to mention you'd have to swim/pull out a considerable distance (200' atleast) to make the run last any time at all. I can't see anytime where a deep water start would be necassary, or practical. Am I missing something?

I don't think your missing anything Blake but given the choice, able to deep water start or not at all, what would you pick?! Just means it can pull bigger people.

thats is very nice craftsmanship, what did you use for your spool?

also has anyone made a winch with cruise control, or automatic speed adjuster?
Old     (blake_hughes)      Join Date: May 2004 Location: Weatherford, Texas       04-18-2006, 1:20 PM Reply
Yeah, that's what I figured... I'm planning to build one, and am looking to use a larger engine, just because I'm not a lightweight... And cause a friend of mine says the 6.5hp they used was maxed out, and somewhat struggling, on seated starts.

Hopefully no one is planning to swim out for each time they want to winch in... That'd suck!

Then I supose there are those times where you could have it at 1000' and fall after only 300' in deep water with 700' still to go?!!!

There something I like about the sound of a constant strong pull from an 8-12 hp engine. Plan for the worse and you'll always be prepared!

What about a 22 horse . . . i just remembered my buddy has one sitting in his garage . . .

Whoa, are you looking to pull 2 riders?

I've been told it's better to have too much, and not need it, than to need more. I guess it'd just mean that your engine wouldn't have to work as hard.

Good point Paul, I guess you could get up, and travel into deeper water... That's what I overlooked.

I'm planning on having a huge spool of line. I'm not sure how much I have right now, but I'm guessing it's close to 1000 ft. So, I'll keep that in mind.

why do you need to use a clutch? I am looking into doing this, is it so when you start the engine you dont start the pull?
Old     (lop)      Join Date: Aug 2005       04-18-2006, 11:35 PM Reply
you need a clutch for starting the engine. you won't have enough power to start the engine under load and you can't take off with a bunch of slack in your line.

Here is the improved pic. 60 tooth sprocket and chain tensioning plate for the motor.
My spool is a piece of 5.5" pipe with 2 tablesaw blades with the teeth cut off welded to the sides

thats awesome.. only thing I can think of that might be a little trouble is the spool seems rather small. Then again I know nothing!

Melvin,

That's a pretty big jump on that sproket, isn't it? Why'd you make that change?

adam curtis,

how'd that work? that's exactly what i was about to do.
Old     (melvinator)      Join Date: Apr 2001       04-20-2006, 7:03 AM Reply
Blake, on paper the sprocket was perfect, but when we tried it it was too much strain on the motor.

The spool size will determine your gearing. Some winches have a bigger spool and thus a huge sprocket. Finding 7"-8" is not an easy thing to do.

How does the clutch assembly work?! Like how does it start once the rider is ready and engine is on. How do you adjust speed (while riding adjust speed?)?
Old     (blake_hughes)      Join Date: May 2004 Location: Weatherford, Texas       04-21-2006, 6:15 PM Reply
Paul,

You could look at it like this... The clutch is 2 pieces, attached to each other. 1 piece has the sprocket attached to it, and the other piece is attached to the engine output shaft. The two pieces won't spin together, until the engine reaches a certain rpm. In this case, this allows the engine to idle, without spinning the spool. When the rider is ready, someone will throttle up the engine, which will cause the clutch to grab, which will cause the spool to turn, which will cause the the rider to be pulled in.

Adjusting the speed is as simple as increasing, or decreasing, the throttle. However, I'm sure you wouldn't want to try to do too much of that... These engines don't have the power to make those kind of adjustments. I'm sure it's a full throttle situation.

wow i was thinking that I was going to build one soon and I bought an engine just like this one below..... its a 9hp... I havnt essembled it yet but Im sure hoping the extra horses will pull deepwater starts.... I payed 61 dolalrs for it cuz no one else bid on it.... VERY CHEAP!!!! The starting price was a buck and shipping was 60 dollars. Starts it and it started first pull and ran great!! Ill post pictures when my whole winch is done!

jhill, that is the bayou destroyer! It has a custom spool that will fit either a four wheeler or a golf cart. By far the easiest way to go.
