Since we are all regularly adding "stuff" to our boats, I wanted to share some "road rash" we've just learned about. When you have stainless steel hardware there is a inherent possibility for the threads to "gall" or weld up and lock together. Fellow gearheads can learn more at http://www.atlanticfasteners.com/technical/tips_020.html

BOTTOM LINE: Buy some thread lubricant / anti-seize at your local auto, marine or home improvement store and use it on any stainless hardware you install on your boat. Put a coating on the threads and it will prevent potential problems. It was always something I used growing up around saltwater so we could get the bolts back of after a few years but it turns out preventing locking of stainless hardware is an equally important use.

BTW: Never-Seez is just one brand, Loctite and Permatex and a bunch of other companies make equivilent products.

Bill, you may have missed this one...I posted on the Jersey Riders thread, well b/c I ride in Jersey but you should be able to realte!!!

What a weekend................I love this sport and boating in general BUT, salt does take it's toll on neglected parts. Apperently I missed greasing a bolt on my tower b4 putting it in for the winter, to make a long story short,,,,,,,,,,,,1 SS Bolt ='s 5hrs of drilling, 16 drill bits, 2cracked extractors (EZ-Out) a pint of oil (for cooling the bits, a quart of water (cause the oil ran out) 2 burned fingers, and a lot of swearing!!!

I will never make that mistake again!!!

Kevin,

I can certainly relate and I feel your pain, customers were telling us of the problems so we spent a lot of money and accused a great vendor of providing crap hardware before we solved the problem - guess we should chalk it up to experience.

this is very good advice. stainless hardware is notorious for galling. we build stainless equipment all day long here at my day job, and anti-seize goes on every threaded connection.

Well this is a inherent "Material/design" flaw that, if the manufacturers of the Mastercraft Towers bothered to think twice about, would have relized this was not the best choice!!!
