It's been in the low 60's moving into the high 60's around central Texas. Best time of year to ride. No walley's but lots of Skeeters.

Rash guard in 49. Eat it Josh Weitekamp! OOH!

It was a bad idea though. I've been riding in a Sam's Club spring suit since then though, in 50-54 degree water... My skin goes numb and it feels funny.

Simon, that reminds me of something I saw on ESPN the other day.

This white guy and a black guy got into a conversation regarding why white guys don't play basketball, and it's because they've been conditioned by society to believe that they can't compete against black athletes in that sport. Then the black guy said that the reason white guys don't play basketball is because they're too lazy to put in the effort to keep up with the naturally stronger and faster black guys in the sport, and then he said that white guys seem to be more into x-game sports and hacky sack. Ignoring the obvious and retarded hacky sack reference, he definitely has a point when he says that white guys prefer extreme sports. Not to be racist, but how often do you see a black wakeboarder? I've seen Pacific Islander, Latino, Asian, Indian, Native American and Middle Eastern riders, but never a black rider. It's funny how I didn't think about that until that conversation on ESPN...

And to say that X-Game type sports are a lazy equivalent of basketball just made me angry, because you have to do mad work to get good at a sport where your primary activity is spinning and flipping and twirling in the air behind a boat....

Sorry for the thread jack.

yeah after I wrote that I thought: "...... man I hope a black dude doesnt read this and get offended" and then I thought "wait i dont think black people wakeboard" I could be wrong but I honestly have never seen it. with all their mad ups you think they would be all over wakeboarding. I have seen some dude shred it up on a snowboard before; he was crazy good!
Old     (wakeboardern1)      Join Date: Aug 2007       04-03-2008, 8:42 AM Reply
Yeah, I've seen black snowboarders, but never a black wakeboarder. Maybe it' just because of the area I'm in, or maybe it's an all over thing. I mean, I've even seen a DOG wakeboarding (cliff's white friend should totally ride with him ) but yeah. You get the idea. I hope I'm not coming across as racist, cause I'm not trying to, I'm just pointing out a phenomenon in our sport that I just recently noticed...

yeh dude me too; I know this isnt ment to be racist at all; the way I look at this sport is "the more the marrier!"

kier dillon and a couple skateboarders plus a couple surfers. but good point. There aren't many black people to begin with in Az, let alone many on the water. I have seen 3 groups of black people on the lake I go to. A family @ the marina on a really nice pontoon boat having a good time fishing and such, about 12 dudes in a 14' aluminum boat and looked like haitian refugees. They were all adult males with the floral pattern button down shirts cargo shorts goofy fishing hats and blaze orange survival life vests. The last looked like the athlete, rapper, porn actor in a 40-something dual blown engine speedboat. Not to say I don't see the same stereotypes in white people on the lake but that's not the topic.

I have tried to get my friend to wakeboard but he is afriad of water and cant swim but besides that I dont know who could fill this large void in our sport.

There is a group of guys on Falls Lake in Raleigh, NC that wakeboard and are black.

um josh palma he rides for Hl on thier pro team. Theres a few other that are just breaking into the pro ranks as well. For not trying to be racist your doing a good job being ignorant. Also WW did a rider profile last summer of another kid that rips too.

One of the guys on our college ski team is black, he riders pretty well too

I'm sorry, I've never heard of these guys. As a matter of fact, I couldn't name one guy on the Hyperlite team, minus Shaun Murray.

And note what you said "Theres a few other that are just breaking into the pro ranks as well"

FEW is the key word. I'm sorry if I can't keep up with everyone who's getting into the pro ranks in the sport. But in the 12 Wakeboard movies that I own, I've never seen a black guy. Not one. I'm sorry that that makes me an ignorant racist who's a moron.

And I'm sorry that I was NOT A MEMBER LAST SUMMER! Thanks for noticing that Soli. I wasn't around for any kind of WW rider profiles, prior to September, because I rarely visited this site in August when I registered. I don't spend my time digging through old posts and old stories here on Wakeworld.

I'm sorry that I don't go digging through everyone's profiles to visit their websites so that I know what everyone looks like.

I'm sorry that I'm apparently an ignorant white racist who has a distinct need to know EVERY PRO in the sport, lest I be castrated. Dear lord man, I'm sorry that I haven't seen a single black wakeboarder on my lake. I'm sorry that I've never seen one in any of my 12 DVDs. I'm sorry that I've never noticed any in Alliance during my very short subscription time. I must be an ignorant asshat. Thanks.

There's no need to be a complete jerk about it. And hopefully you'll all see the sarcasm dripping from my post. And also, hopefully you'll notice that I began this by merely quoting a black espn commentator on how black guys don't usually get involved with x-games type sports.

i didnt even know that you just joined that wasnt the point. The point was think b4 you type. Especially if your new. Who cares what you've seen dont make a statement like that and try to play wow is me after words. You dont have to know everything, but dont make comments like you know either. And just cuase you say one dumb thing doesnt make you racist. That fact that your trying to blame me for saying you were wrong is a good sign you know you put your foot in your mouth. I was just pointing out that is there is some.

64 degrees, that sounds amazing...

The water I was swimming in last weekend was bordering on 32 degrees. They had to keep clearing the ice.

I never said that there weren't any, I just said that I hadn't seen any Soli. I never said I did know, I just said that I hadn't seen any. I never tried to blame you for me not knowing who the black athletes in wakeboarding are, I just said that I hadn't seen any (I have no idea where you read me blaming you for anything in my post, if you could point me to that part?).

Are you beginning to see my point? When you call me ignorant, I get frustrated. I never once said that I knew that there weren't any, I just said that I HADN'T SEEN ANY. Attack comments like you initially made were not necessary, you just had to correct me by pointing out riders that I didn't know about, like Nate-O and Nick Tomsyck did. You did point out some, but you also called me ignorant and essentially attacked me for not knowing and asking why there weren't any REALLY VISIBLE black riders in wakeboarding, whether you realize that you did that or not.

And the point behind my post about myself being relatively new was to show you that referencing an article on this website from a year ago is a foolish thing to do at best. This site has well over 20,000 members, new ones joining every day. When you reference something like that in the manner and tone that you did, you said it in a way as though I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN that it was there, and that I SHOULD HAVE READ IT because it was on this site. I was pointing out that I was not here, so there was no way for me to have known about it.

You played the part of the typical guy trying to put words into my mouth with your last post, which seemed to be a backpeddle for you to try to get away from the idea that what I said is racist, despite you already traveling partway down that path with "For not trying to be racist your doing a good job being ignorant." That's the same as calling someone a racist, whether you realize it or not. Most racism comes from ignorance. Maybe you should think before you say something.

And could you please explain to me how this statement right here says that I was making comments as though I know what I'm talking about?

"Yeah, I've seen black snowboarders, but never a black wakeboarder. Maybe it' just because of the area I'm in, or maybe it's an all over thing." Because last time I checked, maybe usually means that I'm not sure, or does the phrase "I don't know/I'm not sure" need to be spelled out here on wakeworld alongside sarcasm? This is the only thing that I said that you could be referencing in your two posts, unless there's something else regarding what I was saying about the ESPN hosts comments on the matter.

someones sensitive today! looks like your putting words in my mouth now. And for your info most of the peeps on this board have been here for a very long time its mostly regulars who are on everyday or noobies asking what board they should buy then they come back a few times and here and there. Most noobies have a great tendacy to put thier foot in their mouth. I wasnt trying to acuse you in my 1st post it was just a fyi. But after your second post and the the third is well now my attitude is screw you.

Again i never said your were racist what i said is that you were coming across as ignorant sorry the truth hurt so much.

that a sick pic of that guy falling lol
Old     (wakeboardern1)      Join Date: Aug 2007       04-03-2008, 4:14 PM Reply
There's a distinct between ignorance in a sentence alone, and ignorance in the way that you used it after referencing the term racist early on. There's also a distinct difference between ignorance and never having come across something and asking about it. You see, if I was ignorant, I would have said "There are no black wakeboarders out there." That's an ignorant statement. Saying "I've never seen a black wakeboarder" is not an ignorant statement. If you'd really like to get into the semantics of the matter, I'd be glad too.

And how do you think "most of the peeps on this board who have been here for a very long time" got started on this board? The same way that I did 6 months ago, shocking realization huh? There's also a large difference between putting a foot in one's mouth, and having to go into great detail about one was trying to say, which sadly, seems to be beyond you.

If you weren't trying to accuse me in the first post, there are plenty of other ways to phrase what you were saying than using the terminology that you did. Maybe you need to think about what you say to people over a text forum before you say it. A lot more thought has to go into what you say in a text based conversation because a person cannot hear the tone of voice that you are using. Maybe I failed to fully explain myself in my initial posts, but it in no way shape or form was an ignorant statement, nor was it a valid reason for you to call me ignorant despite my attempts to avoid sounding racist, something that I've learned is darn near impossible to do in today's day and age.

And no cliff, you aren't going to get away from being too much of a wimp to get into 64 degree water. Put on that life jacket and jump in.

Its funny that every year this comes up. But I do have to say that last year I saw the most black Americans on L.A than ever before.

Lol, nice.

Oh, and Greg, I hate you for living in central Texas and your warm weather. Grrrr...

My first time in the water this year was March 4th, and I jumped in with a rash guard and trunks... Biggest mistake of my life. Ever. EVER. I even had a wetsuit, I was just too lazy to put it on. What I'd give to have relatively warm water nearly perpetually like you.

Cliff. In the water. I'd say now, but it's dark and 11:30 (10:30 for you...), which just wouldn't make sense at all.

In all fairness I have only seen maybe 2 or 3 BA wake boarders in person in the past 7 years out of all the lakes and rivers and contest I have been too. delta ca., Samamish Wa., Trinity river, lower or upper san jac, Dons lake, TSR, dunlap, canyon lake tx, nasworthy, lewisville nand a few others thaat I can't think of.

Cliff you're still a pink taco

a pink taco Greg?
not sure what that means, but it can't be good

in my defense, if possible, in the summer....lake Arlington water temp gets between 95 and 102 degrees

that's what I'm used to
so 64 is really cold by comparison

having said that.......I'm gettin in the week of the 21st

lame, I know, but oh well

SML's water temp us up to around 87 by the end of last summer. Average temp was around 103 outside, and this is in southwestern VA! Apparently one of the LF guys was interviewed by a local news station just before BROstock, and he was asked about the weather. His response was "Man, I'm from florida and it's freakin hot!"
