If the gun is legally registered in the state of New York, he has nothing to worry about. If it isn't, he is breaking the law. It's pretty simple.

Moral of the story, don't live in NY and if you do start putting together an exit strategy. Do everything in your power to never allow the government of a victim disarmament or defense free state to take a penny of your money. Not easy, but for a rich dude like the guy in the story it should be pretty easy to relocate to a state that respects natural rights and freedom, including the freedom to defend oneself and one's property.
