Red Bull Blackout brought local film students together with a professional production crew and the world’s top professional wakeboarders, all working collectively to capture the best footage. This unique nighttime film project took place at the Iowa Great Lakes from September 24-28, 2007.
Student teams will collaborate with Apple representatives on their respective campuses to “premiere” their films, further showcasing the dynamic work of the student filmers. The final edits will be included in pro cinematographer Ronn Seidenglanz’s next wake film. The participating schools included Spirit Lake High School, Iowa State University and University of Northern Iowa.
Red Bull Blackout invited some of the best local and professional wakeboarders out to share in this unique film project. Athletes were both local amateurs and top athletes all with diverse types of riding. Professional wakeboarders included J.D. Webb, Collin Herrington and Adam Errington. Wakeskate athletes included Brian Grubb and Reed Hanson.
The professional production crew assisted the students as they attempted to create progressive visuals by filming wakeboarding on everything from barges to rails in the dark through use of tools such as specialized lighting and helicopters. The crew consisted of Ronn Seidenglanz from Sidewayz Productions, Brooks Farrell, cinematographer from Los Angeles, Dan Hughes, cinematographer out of Vancouver, Canada, Josh Letchworth and Joey Meddock, professional photographers from “the Standerd Quarterly.”
