Well of coarse visual is the first. Second would be lightly knocking on them with a hammer so you can get an idea of the condition inside the stringer. There will be a different sound between a solid peice of wood and one with rot or water in it. I wouldn't recommend probing or poking into the srtinger as this is just a way for moisture to enter later unless it's sealed up afterwards. Push on the sides and look for movement.
