bmartin, if you pull the black lace out of the boot you will eject much easier. That was how I rode them last year, it also makes them a lot easier to get on and off.

When I winch with my Slingshot boots I just leave the harness and the liners on my feet. It's pretty stylish, and protects your feet from who knows what's under the water.
