My brother in law has killed two subs (L7 10" and Diamond 12") now with his new amp (Kicker 750.1 i think). Not sure if it is to much power, faulty subs, or there is something wrong with the amp.
I think the VC on the L7 melted. The sub no longer moves.
The Diamond put off a lot of smoke then had no sound.
What do you think may be the cause for this???

Where did he set the gain on the amp?

tonality 06-12-2007 7:46 AM

Sounds like he had the gain too high...or was just overdriving the sub. I show that L7 to only take 600watts peak, and he's probably driving the gain a bit, turning up the HU, and either clipping or overdriving. Gotta match your power to your drivers.
Send him this, or just read it and show him how and he'll think you're an audio god...but he'll bug you about it forever if you do. ;)

http://mobile.jlaudio.com/support_pages.php?page_id=143

(Message edited by tonality on June 12, 2007)

I think he set it at 40%-50% of max.

sounds way too high, 750 watt amp set to 50% gain on a 600watt MAX sub...kaboom.

I guess that is why the L7 melted...haha

10in L7's are rated at 600 RMS and 1200 peak. Every 750.1 that I've seen has a true wattage rating right around 900 on the certificate. He probably does have the gain turned up too much

Ah, my mistake...600 peak per VC, good catch Javony.
