Like Jeffrey said, keeping the handle tight to your front hips helps keep things in control when you land and there may still be slack.
Try and make sure you're coming down on the tail of your board first vs. flat.... a flat landing will smack much harder and give you way more of a jolt. Tail first should help keep things soft.
You also want to land still slightly on edge, if you're crossing the wakes + some you'll have a fair amount of lateral speed, that needs to be reduced slowly or else you'll tumble over.
