Anyone spend much time on this lake? I remember a few posts a while ago from some people who ride there. Just wondering what you guys think of the lake in general and what the conditions are like on weekends. Like how busy it gets and how early I need to get up to get good water.
I live in Indianapolis and right now I have a small condo on Morse. I'm thinking about selling this and getting a house on Freeman. Now I can make it to Morse during the week (45 min) and sometimes find smooth water. Not sure I'd be able to do this as Freeman is over an hour. Weekends are usually no good at Morse, too crowded. I'm thinking Freeman may be the same way.
Also, anyone think of any lakes near Indy that would be better? I'd really like to be within an hour of downtown and have smooth weekend water.

I board up there quite a bit. Its not bad as long as you don't mind getting up at dawn! On weekends we usually try to be out there at day break. You can get a good couple of hours before it gets too choppy. You can get some good runs in the evening too. But during the day on weekends its usually pretty crowded from Memorial to Labor day. Through the week it is pretty good all day. I live in Greenfield (20min east of indy) and it takes about 1-1/2 hours to get there. We also do Raccoon quite a bit. Its crowded too, but there is a portion of the lake that stays pretty smooth most of the time. I think they are both pretty much like every other public lake in Indiana.
My parents have a place on freeman, and I have spent countless hours on that lake. Pretty much the only time you ever see butter on that lake is dawn and then really early or late in the year. The other thing is when it is butter, you can't even really stay in one area, as there are so many steel walls around the lake that the waves bounce back (as opposed to a natural shoreline where they are dissipated)
We would typically ride from about 5am to 9am on the weekends. after that it is cruisin the lake and sleepin on shore.
When I saw the post I thought I'd have tons to say since I too ride up there all the time but...ugh what they said Last season I rode Thursdays after work at Morse too (I work in Carmel). Good luck in your search...fill us in if you find anything. Seems like any decent (decent for Indiana that is) lakes are an hour and a half away from Indy.

I've spent time on Schafer but not Freemen. I really don't bother going there anymore. All the lakes around Indy will be crowded. South of Columbus is Hardy Lake, which is a pretty fun place to camp and ride for the weekend.
We have a couple nice lakes up here by me. But nothing beats private lakes.
Thanks for all the comments. Sounds like Freeman is no better than Morse (or any other lakes near Indy). NAW, what lakes are nice up by you? Just curious. Hope, let me know if you're ever looking for a third on Morse this summer.
