I'm in the market for a tow boat. I have an '89 Supra Saltare I probably won't be able to use for a year while stringers are being done. I like the large boat and firm but rampy wake. I looked at and water tested a '95 Sunsport today, which has composite stringers. I was optimistic for a similar wake and not rot or stringer issues. Unfortunately it needed major glass work so I passed. The glass over top the composite stringer was delaminated where it attaches to the hull on port side. At the rear I could fit my fingers between stringer tabbing and the hull, toward the engine it wasn't so far separated but was coming apart.
When I was last in the market for a boat in 2010 composite boats cost a ton more and everyone said they were the way to go because you'll never need to do stringers and floor. I was skeptical, apparently rightly so. I bought my Saltare knowing it would eventually need stringers, and getting 15 years out of it wasn't bad. I was disappointed to see a 6 year newer composite boat in worse condition. Best I can figure was it was stored wet and freeze separated the stringer from the hull.
In any event, for a cheaper boat to use a bit this season and next until mine is done I've seen early 2000s Moomba Outback LSV for reasonable prices. Any major or common issues with these hulls or anything else on the boat to be aware of? Mainly concerned about stringers, delamination, fiberglass or structural issues.
