It really depends on the type of river or lake bed you are anchoring in. For sand, small rock, mud or grass the box anchor is great. Also the box anchor is by far the easiest to store on your boat since it folds up and comes with a nice storage bag. For quick anchoring and easy adjustment add the anchor buddy to it (45' rope that has a bungie inside of it and shrinks to 15'). You can also get the shore spike to tie off the back of your boat to keep it square with the shore. Check out their website here, lots of handy stuff.

Here is a great web site with the differant kinds of anchors and the applications, however it does not include the box anchor.

I use two rubber coated river anchors. One at the bow and one at the stern. They hold great in every situation that I've been in. Plus, they're a lot less expensive than a box anchor(usually $20-$30 each).

Box Anchor, By far the best and simplest to use.
The anchor will set on the first attempt every time. Well worth the money IMO

I am also looking for an anchor for my Supra 24 SSV. Would what they call the "small" Box Anchor be enough? Where can you get these anchors? Is it also true that you don't need a chain? It just seems that the less metal you have on your anchor the less chance there is of scratching the crap out of your boat.

A Small would be just fine and no chain is needed, I just use a anchor buddy line and it holds every time on the first try on my centurion avy 22".

I've been needing to get a new anchor and I've been looking at the box anchors. What size are the small ones and the large ones? I have a 23' XLV which is a bit smaller than the Supra 22SSV. Are you sure that a small one is all I would need? Would a big one be more beneficial or is it just overkill?

Also, where is the best place to buy them? Best price?

www.Slideboxanchor.com The small is just fine, Its good for 18'-> 32' boat. Cost about $129.00. I picked mine up at a boat show but you can get them
at most online stores like Barts, westmarine ETC.

Here is from the Slide Anchor website. Small size would do it (don't get "baby"):

Baby $109.95 Personal watercraft
Small $129.95 Offshore / Sport 18' to 30', cabin cruiser to 24'
Large $159.95 Offshore / Sport to 40', cabin cruiser to 32'
Ex-Large $229.95 House boats, cruisers longer than 32'

Box Anchor. I used the shovel looking ones and couldn't get my anchor to set 90% of the time. Finally it did and now it sits on the bottom of the Sacramento River stuck in a log or somthing. That water gets going pretty fast and I have had absolutely NO problems with the box anchor. Sets on the first time.
