In Seattle there was a guy I ran into a couple times 2 years ago that was towing an 06 X30 with an early 2000's extended cab tacoma 4x4. That looked dangerous as hell.

Yikes..... the MC dealer here tried to convince me that I could pull an Xstar with a Honda Pilot. I pulled a 4000 lb Vride with a 2007 Dodge Nitro (5000 cap., V6, AT).... didn't care for it & upgraded the truck. Also pulled a 3500 MC 205 with a 98 Dodge Dakota (6200 lb cap., 5.2 liter V8, AT) with no problem at all. 5000 lb limit & a boat/trailer combo that could easily be 5000 lbs or over? I didn't believe him. But I guess there are people out there that will do it. (Message edited by bill_airjunky on March 24, 2009)

most of us probably "overtow"... full size pickups pulling john boats. made the switch from full size to mid size (tacoma)-with the canadian market (TSB) rear springs its fine for our 22ft'er.

Yeah I pull it fine but I take it easy on the hills. The real question is how is it launching the boat into the water? I am worried about the slick ramp! I guess 4 low and go huh!!

Stopping is not a problem with the Touarag! Heck any 1 ton truck would envy the brakes! I've got 6 piston calipers on 13.5" rotors in the front and 4 piston's in the rear with 12.5" rotors

Nissan Navara = Frontier, not Titan. Titan is an over the top full figured truck for the US market only as far as I can tell. We used to have a Titan but it was just plain more than we needed. Fun though. Over 300hp, very thirsty, couldn't park it easily. Did tow very well but in a hunting squirrels with RPGs kind of way.

I have been wishing that we could get some of those small diesel rigs here for a long time. 300 lb ft of torque at 2000 rpm - 3.2 litre! Awesome. If we could get a 400 lb ft diesel full size suv package, that would be perfect, IMO. Funny here in ca that if you want a diesel, you have to have the biggest freegin rig capable of towing a small home. Now - an interesting question I have. What kind of mileage does it get - guys are claiming high teens with the monster full size diesel trucks on this site towing boats, and some claim over 20 when not towing. Care to let us know, Jens? with and without the boat... BTW - my dad has that same truck, but the extended cab - NISMO package (whatever that means). I believe he gets around 19 hwy with the gas V6 - not towing obviously.

some of those dont look to bad...others like the car...WOW! Heres how i look at it: if everything is fine and all you have to do is tow and stop you could pull it around with lots of things like we see here. But whats going to happen when you blow a tire? or heaven forbid two tires? or trailer falls off the ball? In my mind you want to be prepared for a "worst case" scenario. Sorry guys but that boat would take some of those smaller vehicles wherever it wanted to if something bad happened. i tow with an 07 crew cab duramax and i would still hate to see my boat jackknifed behind that truck and it weighs 9K. Best of luck, and god speed!

Is there anything I can do to my truck that will help its towing capability? I have an 03 Dodge Dakota w/ V8 4.7L. It struggles to keep gear even when towing on the freeway. I have a couple mountain trips planned for summer and I'm not too confident it'll even make it.

That 4.7 just isn't made for towing that kind of weight, Jeremy. I know they spec it as OK, but I don't think there are many owners who would agree with it. It's the same list of mods as anything else to get more power, bigger exhaust, better quality air cleaner, and chip it. Also be sure your running close to stock sized tires & their fully inflated. On second thought, North Cascade Highway, or even Stevens Pass isn't gonna be fun. Your BEST bet might be to get your buddy with a bigger truck to join you on the trip.

/\ agree and it's getting worse! Chevy is taking 4.10's out completely unless it doesn't have the allison. I didn't want to shell out diesel prices when I bought my truck so I could afford my boat and scored 4.10's in a 1/2 ton truck with 5.3 liter. It rips when hooked up to my boat for a gas engine of its size. I presume with the focus on MPG the mfg's are forced to run higher gears

I had a 97 150 4.6 love the motor. not a diesel by any means, but it puts 300tq down, and thats fine, but it is not light, and it has 3.55's It HAS to do 6k rpm to get out of its own way. I think with 4.10's or 4.55s it would rip. And it gets about 14mpg, so losing a mile or two would be worth it if it moved. Now with wife willing we are in the market for a newer truck!

Towing is easy, just keep it at 60 and away we go. The only thing to watch for is dead ends. We got stuck once going to a new riding spot and took the wrong dirt road at 10pm. Backing up at night 100 yards took almost 1/2 hr.

Has anyone towed with the new Colorado 2.8l diesel? I sure like the idea of a tow vehicle that fits easily in the garage (without folding mirrors) and gets 30 mpg.

old thread, but you may be able to put a tune on your Dakota. I'm running a superchips 91 octane tow tune on my grand cherokee. night and day difference. higher RPM shift points, better fuel economy both while towing and not towing. can adjust for bigger tire size as well. Keeps trans cooler, Its a must IMO.

Please report back on towing boat.
Also, any comments on rear seat space? Really liking this vehicle just nervous that when we decide to have children that car seats won't fit.

I will certainly report back on towing. On rear seat space, it is definitely better than any 1/2 ton crew cab. My son is 5' 11" and says it is very comfortable for him. There should be no problem at all with car seats in the rear.

Surface on the ramps under water are so slippery that when they go enough deep into the water the vehicles lost the grip (and get ability a little float). All other work doing gravity - they slide into lake even with parking brakes. See at vid - many of them pull out with blocked rear wheels.

I used to tow my Malibu skier with a Crown Vic when I was in college. It looked weird, but that boat was tiny and the grandma car had a 5.0. I just upgraded the shocks.
I have a 4x4 1500 and just ordered a 25LSV. As much as I hate to spend it, It might be diesel time.
