cheap and durable in wakeskating is basically an oxymoron. but wakeskates are not that expensive anyways, compared to wakeboards. if you are looking to spend 100 bucks and get a quality board i would wait for the 2008 LF Factions. for 08 they are being made in california were quality control will be much better then previous years in taiwan. the 08s will also be wider then before so no more toe drag. 40" or 42" would be a fine size. flat decks are notorious for not lasting very long but at least Liquid Force is stepping up with them. I think only LF, Hype, and CWB make flat decks for 100. the cwb skates are a joke though. hype is really skinny and very long for more of a wakeboard stance, while the lf is a more versitile style skate. LF's smallest board is a 40" while hype's smallest is a 107cm(42.5ish"). 41" is a board anyone can ride and have fun and like. if you look at wakeskate companies usually thet make 3 sizes: 40, 41, 42. so hype is definitely on the big side.

I've only been wakeboarding for about two months, but I'd like to give wakeskating a try as well. From what I've read I think I want to start with a foam top, but beyond that I don't know what I need. I'm a beginner, 5’11” and 175lb. I’d like to stay under $150, what should I look at?

there are a ton of posts about that in this section of wakeworld on after another. actually my previous post answers your question. for your size i would go with a 41". but since your limit is 150 you will be getting a flat deck. you can get the LF faction 42"(comes in a 40", 42", and 44") or the HL scape 107cm. i mention both of these above.

Can you go into detail a little bit about the types of boards? What does "flat deck" mean? I might be willing to spend more if I know the differences. (Message edited by hunter660 on November 08, 2007)

a flat deck has no concave on the top. a concave deck has concave on the top which increases leverage heel to toe as well as leverage on ollies.

So it sounds like a flat deck is the place to start then.

for sure. just dont expect it to last more then 1-2 years, but by then you will know what you want out of a board so its all good. and also, you can always take off that foam and grip it when you want to.
