Every once in a while a product hits the market that's so simple and straightforward it makes you say, "Why hasn't somebody done this already?" We've had all kinds of video instructionals available for a while now and the occasional magazine/website instructional can be a great help to your riding. You can also hit up a professional instructor if you can afford the cost and time off. However, former world and X-Games champion Jeremy Kovak has offered another alternative by putting together a book of trick instructionals that both simplifies the learning process and makes it convenient for you to bring some knowledge on the boat with you.
Wake Physics is a small (5.5" x 8.5"), spiral-bound book that will fit easily in your boat's glove box. It's got 100 tear-resistant pages and nearly 100 trick instructionals. In fact, the pages themselves will stand up to water. However, if you get the book wet, you'll definitely want to wipe it dry before you close it up or the ink will cause the pages to stick together.
The organization of the tricks is broken into six chapters: Beginner, Grabs & Added Style, Rolls & Flips, Spins, Raleys and Mobes. Each section starts with a general description of the type of trick covered. Jeremy takes you from deep-water starts all the way through the Big Worm.
The best part of this book is the photography. Each instructional has it's own photographic sequence of the trick as performed by top pros like Parks Bonifay, Chad Sharpe, Erik Ruck, Danny Harf, Dallas Friday, Derek Dyer, Corey Miner and Jeremy himself. The photographic sequences are excellent and almost like watching a short video clip of each trick in slow motion.
So you get a description of the trick, a how-to by a guy who definitely knows what he's talking about when it comes to wakeboarding and a great sequence of photos of a top pro doing the trick all in a package that you can take anywhere. What more can you ask for? Well, Jeremy has also thrown in a couple of extras that you might not expect, but are super useful, especially when you're on the boat. There is a grab index with the names of all the grabs, a glossary of terms that covers the basics and a section on hitting and driving double ups.
This book is so handy, useful and affordable, that I've got two copies of it. One lives in my boat while the other, and I apologize for the mental image this might generate, resides in my bathroom. That way I'm learning while I... Well, you get the picture!
Check out the Wake Physics website at www.wakephysics.com for more shots of pages and other info about the book. You can also order it online for only $39.99.
