Review: Free4All from Bump Films

Date: 7/12/02
Author: Scott Dickens, Glass & Powder Board Shop

FREE4ALL I finally had a chance to watch the new Bump Films release "Free 4 All" and I must say, "DAMN GOOD VIDEO!"

This is the first video that I've seen this year that has a very distinct personality - very focused shooting and distinct sections for each rider. The movie opens with a few minutes of the pros rummaging around an old abandoned building (not sure exactly what's going on with that), but then the movie rolls into the first rider, Parks.

Parks' section is just plain SICK, as always! The man has more style than most of the other riders combined. He takes basic tricks like blind 180's and blows them up to outrageous proportions, then adds style like nobody else. The result is a super-fluid, extra-large, styley segment that showcases both sliders and regular wake-to-wake tricks. Absolutely awesome segment, as always. His Indy off-axis BS 3's are just INSANE looking and huge.

Next up is Danny Harf, who constantly amazes me with new tricks and extra style. Everything is huge and off-axis and STYLEY. He does this crazy-looking triple up whip and lays out a crazy-looking, tweaked-out, 15-foot-high0 SOMETHING that's just too tweaked to describe. His segments get better and better with every movie. It's nice to see him filmed by Bame and tastefully presented.

Next up is Kyle Schmidt, who doesn't get tons of airplay in most videos, but proves that he deserves more in F4A. He is super smooth on sliders, nails some nice grabbed crow mobes, off-axis spins and LOTS of tube-shot footage of aerial tricks to blind.

Next up is Tim Kovacich just absolutely RIPPING on a Cassette in super-shallow water. Some of the falls are brutal! He really makes it look easy and nails a kick-flip as well as lots of WTW 180's, sliders, varials, etc. Really nice segment of a relatively un-shot rider. Some of his falls on sliders beg the question: Did he wear a cup to film it, and, if not, does he still have both of his testicles?

JD Webb's section comes next. He has some awesome footage looking very grown up all of a sudden. Some of the angles are just great. They seem like they're shot with a wide-angle lens from a chase boat from the top of the tower. At the peak of his tricks he's closest to the camera, shot from the rear. He is really impressive on sliders. He also throws what I think is a Dum Dum 540 (only saw it once, but it's pretty nice).

Chad Sharpe is another rider who hasn't gotten enough coverage, but goes really big with an individual style.

Rob Struharik is up next and all I have to say is, Nose Grab Crow Mobe 540 - super smooth and STICKS it. He also has a whole segment that features him clearing a 25-foot section of land with a table-top setup. He launches off a kicker and lands on a downside kicker - absolutely crazy and smooth. Everything he does looks understated and smooth, as always. He is the only CWB rider featured, but the only one that impresses me like he does.

Shane Bonifay's sections are really stepping up. He's really come into his own when it comes to style and originality. You can really tell that he and Parks are two completely different riders with very individual styles. He does one HUGE off-axis spin where he grabs the board, passes the handle between his legs (hard to describe) and sticks it to ride away!

There are tons more riders to talk about, but I don't want to give away the whole video! Let's just say that you NEED to see the U-Haul truck-jumping section. It's the craziest thing I've ever seen on a wakeboarding video. It makes the Byerly bug-sliding segment look tame!

Scott Dickens is the owner of Glass & Powder Board Shop in Virginia.
They have Free4All available on VHS and DVD, as well as just about every other wake video every made. They can be reached at 877-We-Go-Big.
