Coming at one of the best moments it could, USA Wakeboard gives Empire Wake the motivational shove it needed to take another step in the right direction.
“We had just run out of marketing ideas to get the name of the company out there and draw some attention. Then USA Wakeboard threatened lawsuit against us for our name “The Collegiate Wake Series” and BAM we had our attention.” say Rob Mendieta founder of the series.
Now with the biggest compliment Empire Wake has ever received from an organization, they intend to push to a bigger, better level for all the clubs that have shown endless support for the series.
In 2009 Empire Wake saw the need for a new collegiate organization and stepped up to the plate. They spoke to riders, clubs, schools, and wake companies to find out what was needed and have begun to fill those needs. Thus, the Collegiate Wake Series was created against the collegiate monopoly of USA Wakeboard.
The series was formed in direct competition to USA Wakeboard and in fact the only competition with USA Wakeboard. When speaking to schools it was pitched that we were competing against USA Wakeboard. And lastly when it was time to be sanctioned it was with WWA, also USA Wakeboards only competition when it comes to sanctioning bodies.
The suit is over trademark infringement. The accusation:
“Collegiate Wake Series” is too confusing to everyone to the trademark event “Collegiate Nationals.”
“Throughout the entire process of joining the Empire Wake Collegiate Wake Series at no time were we confused about who ran it. The fact that we needed to buy WWA insurance to compete in the series shows that they were in no way a part of USA Waterski. Even at the events USA Waterski was not even mentioned, it was all Empire Wake!” Landan Luna – Texas Tech Wake Club President
Collegiate Wake Series (a series), Collegiate Nationals (a single event)
This lawsuit is a huge positive for Empire Wake. That is the only way they are seeing it. It shows how well we are doing on this level and that they are on the top of the collegiate wake scene.
