Darin Shapiro is the guy that invented big air wakeboarding, along with plenty of innovative tricks, on his way to dominating the wakeboarding scene and claiming a batch of titles in the process. He's probably most famous for his double front flip, known as the "speedball," and riding with the intensity and power of a bulldog.
On Monday, TheGardenIsland.com, a local publication that covers the islands of Kauai and Niihau, Hawaii, reported that Shapiro, 38, was arrested in Kauai on charges of racketeering, conspiracy to commit racketeering and money laundering. Darin's brother Jarrett Shapiro, 42, and father Ray Shapiro, 65, were also arrested. The Florida Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation enlisted Kaua‘i vice officers in the investigation and arrests.
The charges are reportedly in connection with the operations of Darin Shapiro’s Florida clinic, Pain Relief Orlando, and a recently opened clinic in Kauai, Kaua‘i Chronic Pain Center, which dispensed prescriptions for Oxycontin.
Florida Department of Law Enforcement Special Agent Supervisor Tom Foy told The Garden Island on Monday that a news conference to provide details of the investigation will be held Thursday.
