Chico State Wins College Wake Championship

Share

Collegiate WakeboardingLake Las Vegas, NV - "Bridesmaids" no more! Chico State Wakeboard Club finally wins a National Title. It took three long years for this group of athletes to win this huge honor, but there couldn't have been a sweeter win.

In 2010 they came up short after a disappointing showing against the University of Texas. Then in 2011 came up against an unreal team from the University of South Florida. But not this year. They wanted to be part of history here at Lake Las Vegas, where the first-ever wakeboard event took place.

On Saturday Chico State defeated Sacramento State in the morning to advance to the finals. Then they watched as the number one team, Arizona State, took out defending champions South Florida in a stunning win. The two teams were set to meet on Sunday for an epic showdown of number 1 and number 2.

Chico State came out swinging and never looked back. The team took the top six spots as ASU seemed to be still hungover from their huge win the day before. Justin Payton crushed it all week long being the top rider of the entire event. Every match up he took first and helped lead his team all the way to the top. It wasn't just him though. His supporting cast of Rob Way, Travis Briscoe and Colton Duncan did their fair share as they walked all the way to the stage to celebrate the sweetest College Wakeboarding Championship win ever.

Each rider took home a GoPro Hero 2 camera, $100 from Buywake.com and a huge prize pack from CWB Board Co. for their club.

All the sponsors came up big this year for the historic event including Axis Wake, Boulder Boats, NOHO Drink, Red Bull, Kicker Audio, Smith Optics, NATION Clothing and Elevated Clothing.

The Championships will return to Lake Las Vegas next year where the teams will once again square off in what looks to be a huge step for College Wakeboarding.
