Up until recently, we had only heard of two people pulling off a 1080. The late Mark Kenney was reportedly pulling the occasional 1080, but there is no video or photographic documentation of such as far as we know. We do have photographic proof that Parks Bonifay pulled one a few years back in the form of the black and white sequence taken by Bill Doster in 1999, but even that sequence didn't catch the whole maneuver.
As you may have heard by now, 2006 Riders Choice Winner Danny Harf earned his membership in the 1080 club on the afternoon of September 6, 2006, making him the first to pull off the maneuver in over seven years!
Way back in 2004, we teamed up with Ten-80 Wakeboard Gear to offer a bounty to the next rider that could pull off three spins before landing. We put up $1,080 to help push riders toward the elusive maneuver. We never predicted that it would be two years before we wrote that check! However, quite a few predicted that Danny Harf would be the recipient of said check.
In fact, predicting the who and when was part of our 1080 Bounty Contest. We gave you the opportunity to get involved by allowing you to submit an entry with your best guess as to which rider would be the first to pull it off and when that rider would accomplish the feat. We promised the entrant, whom picked the correct rider and came closest to the actual date, a care package of goodies from Ten-80 that includes a back pack, shirt, hat and sticker pack valued at $125.

We had almost 600 hundred entries submitted, and that doesn't count the extremely clever group of 24 that submitted their entries after the 1080 had already been landed! Below is the breakdown of the top ten riders that you thought would pull off the next 1080.
- Parks Bonifay - 150
- Danny Harf - 87
- Phillip Soven - 65
- Matt Sims - 30
- Shane Bonifay - 29
- Andrew Adkison - 20
- Shaun Murray - 14
- Sean O'Brien - 13
- Tino Santori - 12
- Scott Byerly - 7
Of the 87 entrants that correctly chose Danny Harf as the next big spinner, the closest date was 7/27/06 submitted by Joe Pratte. That earns Joe the big Ten-80 prize package. It's not quite as big as the cash prize that Danny will get, but, let's face it, Danny worked a little bit harder.
Thanks to all who ventured a guess and helped make this, our longest contest ever, a huge success.
