Northern California’s boating enthusiasts descended upon Cal Expo in Sacramento March 7-10 for the annual mayhem that is the Sacramento Boat and RV show. While the last few years have been lacking in purchases, this year pleasantly surprised every exhibitor.
With the continued growth of 20% since last year’s show, the guests to Cal Expo were stoked to check out the new year’s gear. The biggest jaw droppers were the yachts us riders now get to ride behind. Every major manufacturer was showcasing their flagship models and they did not disappoint; Nautique’s G Series, Mastercraft’s new X-Star, Tige’s RZ4, MB’s Tomcat and Malibu’s MXZ impressed both the wakeboard and non-riding community alike. With pop-up dashboards, touch screen navigation, wake plates, surf gates, massive ballast tanks, features to the moon and back and enough room to fit three families comfortably, the 2013 boats are nothing short of mind-bottling.
The wake industry was also well represented by shops such as NorCal Mastercraft’s Wake Roots sporting the flavors of the new year. Ronix, Liquid Force, CWB, Hyperlite and Slingshot all received love from supportive customers and new wakeboard enthusiasts throughout the weekend. Celebrity appearances included west coast style masters Mike Schwenne, Trever Maur and Josh Twelker who were high-fiving and autographing there way around the floor like nobody’s business. There was also an appearance from wakesurfer Chase Hazen.
Other exciting news humming around the show was the grand opening of the West’s first full-sized cable, Wake Island, in April. Wake Island’s owner was roaming the show letting everybody know just how incredible it is. The Boardwarrior crew walked the floor promoting their website (basically a YouTube just for boardsports) and the West Coast Camps crew was getting people stoked to learn some new tricks and progress.
Overall, it was a very eventful and exciting show. With 65-plus-degree weather outside, everyone was in summer mode and stoked to start the new season strong. One lucky son-of-a-gun with deep pockets got started earlier than the rest of us, driving away from the weekend with a 30-foot RV and a G23, fully outfitted with boards, ropes and the like! I checked, and he’s not adopting.
